Me personally? It was a specific experience that got me ticked about this. It was while in a rodeo up north. When one loud jackhole happened to be there in the stands screamed that stupid sheyat at the rodeo during the national anthem. Some of the guys knew I was from here and I had to explain that we do not all do that crap. I was emberassed.

I remember that, believe me I have no love for OU, perhaps because I went to school there for a while. But I think the OP was making the point that the behavior is pretty despicable no matter the venue, and I doubt any of us would give OU fans who did this a pass.

I don't say the pledge and I don't sing the anthem. I will remove my hat out of respect, but I do not put my hand over my heart during either.

It is not out of disrespect for veterans, I just don't believe in pledges or national anthems.

While I will agree no one should be talking or being disrespectful during either, I will say that any righteous indignation over people NOT saying it is an overreaction.

I would find it very hard to disagree with your position as you have stated it without dismissing the idea personal liberty.
Thats what makes this country so great.

I don't have much respect for anyone who will dismiss the national anthem. However, just because some of the OU fans decided to change the last word from "brave" to "sooners" some people seem to get their panties in a wad. It's not like they made the last word something insulting, it's just the home of the Sooners (aka the OU stadium) while the USA is the home of the brave.

Given the meaning of Sooners, should they have picked another name?

That could be said for alot of teams. At least the name comes from our state's history and not another country (looking at you USC trojans...).

Some might contend breaking the law and cheating ones future neighbors may not be the part of our history to be proud of.

There's alot of our history that we can't be proud of but the good thing is that it's history. /thread stealing

Yes but usually we don't try to make it something to be proud of. As for thread stealing I'm sorry but your statement about it not being insulting to change brave to Sooners in the anthem just made me think.

I give a lot more respect to the flag than I do an anthem (see: theme song) or pledge. And while I think no one should ever be forced to salute a flag, recite a pledge, or be conscripted into service against their will, I think the lack of participation at sporting events the OP is angry about is justified, and (especially at high school events) is more from laziness than trying to make a point.
