Default Jeep 4 cyl vs 6cyl

Looking at getting my first jeep. Have driven a few and will be using this one more for trail and scouting than a 'pretty rig' to run around town in. Not planning a super lifted mud rig or a rock crawler either. Any jeep people have an opinion on which engine is better, and tranny. Thanks

Definitely get a 6. I've had five jeeps and once made the mistake of a 4. It sucked.

I've have a 4 & 6 cylinder Wrangler. I'll NEVER buy another 4 cylinder. On a slight downhill with the gas pedal on the wood, it would barely get up to 75mph. It had NO power and would barely pull it's own a$$ unloaded on dry pavement.

Had a 4cyl auto trans, it was unstoppable off road, but sucked balls on the road. Get the 6

6cy 4.0 with a 5spd or 6spd and the 4wd and you're unstoppable. It's what I dd and I get about 16-17 anywhere I go. Get an early 4.0, the later ones are prone to cracked cylinder heads and they ALL have cracked exhaust manifolds. Get an aftermarket manifold for it.

^^^^ what they said If you can get the straight 6 even better. But the v6 will do in a pinch. The 4 hates having oversize tires and your mileage will be horrid. 6 cyl ran right will get almost 20

Probably not in the same class y'all are talking about, but I had a 1953 Willys with a 4 cylinder. I took that thing places I wouldn't dare to with the 4x4 truck I have now. It would go ANYWHERE. It just wouldn't go there over 50 MPH.

Not in the same class either, but this discussion reminded me of my first Jeep, a '76 CJ5 with a 304 V8 and 3 on the floor. With side pipes, that sucker could move! My next Jeep was a CJ7 with the 4.2-liter straight six and a 4-speed. Plenty of torque down low, but an absolute slug at highway speeds.

I gave my son my old 48' Willy's, it has a flathead 4.
Did everything I wanted it to do but go fast.

My DD is a 78 CJ7 with the 304 and 3 speed, with side pipes.

That said, go with the Inline 6. I've had plenty of them and any model you can get that has a I6 232/242/258 it's a good choice. The 4-bangers suck if you're going to get on the highway at all...

My first Jeep was a red CJ-7. My grandfather (with whom I grew up) bought it for me at the beginning of my Senior year of high school. I learned quickly that my girlfriends were far more "frisky" out in the middle of nowhere than parking some place in town. Damn....I miss those days!
