Default Travelling from Oklahoma to Arizona.

    Sooner State Pawn
My wife's family lives in Arizona. We travel there yearly and this year will be the first I will be carrying my pistol with me. I plan on getting a shoulder holster for comfort during the 17 hour drive. We pretty much take I-40 the entire way to Arizona. I recently read an article indicating that Arizona was an open carry state and conceal carry was illegal? I'm going to start researching each states laws that we will be traveling through, but thought I would ask here for starters.

    Arizona has "constitutional carry".

Anyone that is 21 and able to legally purchase handguns can carry open or concealed without a license.

And since Oklahoma has reciprocity with Arizona, you're good to go.

Found these by googling: [state] public safety.

I recommend familiarizing yourself with the statutes, particularly prohibited places, private property posting, and state pre-emption clauses. Understand them, print them out, highlight key sections affecting your decisions on how to carry, and carry that paperwork with you. This will ease your mind as you travel, and can help with reminding yourself the rules as you cross borders, enter localities, etc. It's hard to keep it all straight when covering a lot of geography.

OSBI's Reciprocity page is a good place to visit too....it shows all states that have reciprocity with Oklahoma. It also has direct links to the official websites of each state.

(In addition to the details already mentioned by Sam, one thing I always look into is the LEO notification requirement in every state I'm travelling through)

This is my understanding as well, with one note. My understanding is that you must still avoid the Federal Gun Free School Zones(unless you have an actual permit). Although I hear it is not strictly enforced(especially with people simply passing through/traveling). So, if you have a permit in OK you are GTG. If you don't have a permit(in either state), you can still carry in AZ(open or concealed) but should probably avoid GFSZ(at least don't open carry if you must travel through a federally designated victim zone).

Both NM and AZ are CC/OC states, so as others mentioned, you shouldn't have issue if you brush up. http://www.handgunlaw.us is another good resource.

You will pass through the TX panhandle as well, and TX is a conceal only state. I've never had issue (and I've made that trip *many* times), but you will want to be aware.

Thanks for all the links guys. It will make researching this much easier. Nothing would ruin a vacation more than having my firearm confiscated and being thrown in the pokey.

One thing about New Mexico, you may one carry ONE concealed firearm. When I travel I usually carry a backup on my ankle, and was surprised to learn this violated NM CC law.

Also while in New Mexico, it is illegal to CC in a store that sells alcohol...That includes grocery, and convenience stores.
