I always figured JB probably resembled Big Hoss.
Also, Festus was the man.

JB check out the "Sodbusters" episode when you have a chance. You can stream it to your TV via YouTube or some other pay service, it's out there somewhere. I've included a clip I quickly found here so you can get a taste.
Morgan Woodward (think Boss Godfrey on Cool Hand Luke and brother of Tulsa's Lee Woodward of King Lionel fame) plays the ranch owner. It's kinda like a little mini version of Shane and it has some of the best dialogue and cinematography I've seen on a Gunsmoke episode. It's my favorite and I'll bet you'll love it too.
OH and it has Harrison Ford and a young Leif Garrett in it too lol...

Common sense is not a Gift....
Its a punishment, because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

Arness was one big dude.
The early shows are the best. Matt really spoke his mind. Chester was really funny if you pay attention to what he says.
Well, Golly-Bill, J.S., you ole scutter, ain't you taken a like'n to ole Festus yet?
I think I was about 12 when I watched my last episode of "The Rifleman". A young gunslinger came to town to kill Lucas and enhance his reputation. They met in the street. Lucas tries to talk him out of the gunfight. He says, "Let me show you what you're up against." and places six matches in a crack in a hitching rail, walks back to the middle of the street, spins and from the hip, lights all six matches. The gunslinger allows as to how that's pretty good, then draws his revolver and fanning from the hip puts out all six matches.
Even at 12 I wondered how a match would prevent a bullet from breaking the windows of the store behind the hitching rail. I didn't even stay with the show to learn who won the gunfight, if there even was one.
