So here I am,,, Recuperating from a surgery,,, I decided that I could fondl,,, eerrr, clean/lube some pistols. Anyways I grabbed all three of my Cheetahs,,, 85 in .380, 81 in .32, and 87 in .22 LR. I love the look and feel of these pistols,,, They fit my K-frame hands perfectly. One day I went into the The Evil Pawn Shop,,, There in his cabinet was a very clean 85BB with three mags,,, I asked him what his "best" price was and he quoted $399.00 out the door. Having always had a hankering for one of these mid-sized beauties,,, My credit card practically leapt from my wallet. At the time I was into collecting identical pistols,,, In rimfire and centerfire cartridges,,, I also had a fat new gun fund. I searched gunbroker and a few other places,,, I couldn't find an 87 anywhere on-line,,, I decided to do the next best thing,,, I ordered a brand new one. Now this is all my fault because I didn't do any research,,, But imagine my surprise when I received it,,, And found out it only held 7 rounds. What was Beretta thinking? At that time in history,,, Almost all .22 pistols that weren't micro sized,,, Had a capacity of ten rounds with some having 12 or more. The Model 87 Target had ten round magazines,,, Why oh why did they limit the duty version to seven rounds? I've been told that magazines for the 87 Target will fit the duty gun,,, Thereby raising the capacity from seven to ten,,, Can anyone verify if this is true or not? Anyways I just love shooting the 87,,, The pistol is heavy enough that staying on target is easy. Physically it's almost exactly the same size as my Bersa Thunder 22,,, But being lighter the Bersa tends to jump around a bit when rapid firing it. For years I carried that 85 in my concealed carry briefcase,,, Then I received an e-mail from Classic Firearms,,, Offering good to very good 81's for $199.00,,, Extra mags for only $35.00 each,,, I bought 4 extra mags. My only regret is that I didn't order a couple of extra pistols,,, I truly believe this was the best handgun bargain I've ever received,,, A couple of months after I bought mine I tried to order a couple more pistols. The guy I spoke with o the phone said,,, They sold all of the 81's within six weeks of the offer. I was bummed out because I wanted to make a custom holster,,, And gift it to my best friend on his birthday,,, But that old saw certainly applies here,,, "He who snoozes,,, loses." Anyone else have the same level of Cheetah love I have? Aarond P.S. Even though I have no use for it at all,,, I would love to find an affordable model 86 with the tip-up barrel. .
