That video brings back memories. I’ve spent a lot of money on video games in that old arcade. Just before I graduated HS in 1975, they had an indoor go cart track in there. Crossroads Mall used to be really active. It opened in the mid seventies and was THE place to go for shopping. Years later, road construction on I-35 hampered access and the businesses started losing money because customers couldn’t find their way to the mall because of all the detours. Slowly they closed one by one. The mall then became a popular place for older “mall walkers” looking for a safe place to get some exercise. Then, the gangs started moving in, the walkers started leaving and the turf wars started. The shooting occurred when a gangster fired rounds at another gangster on the lower level west side by the stairwell near the old Arcade entrance. The shooter didn’t check his surrounding area before he shooting started or he would have noticed the OCPD officer walking down the stairwell when he started shooting. The officer took out the shooter with a head shot and the mall really declined from there. A few years later signs went up with the name Plaza Mayor (I believe) with the intent of inviting a Hispanic customer base. I haven’t been inside since the shooting, but most recently I’ve heard advertisements of Buchanan’s Flea Market and a Gun Show in the old JCPennys store.
