this is why it's better to challenge anyone that knocks without opening door by asking who's there?

Blake Layman Shot By Homeowner Who Kills His Friend, Gets 55 Years For Murder

In October 2012, 16-year-old Blake Layman and four friends made a very bad decision. Layman and his friends decided to break into a house in Elkhart, Indiana. Layman and his friends banged on the door of a property owned by Rodney Scott, and after getting no reply, they broke into the house.

Assuming no one was home, Layman, together with his buddies Jose Quiroz, Anthony Sharp, and Danzele Johnson, made their way through the house grabbing small items of property on their way while Levi Sparks kept watch outside. The teenagers were about to leave the house when the shooting started. Layman dived into a closet in a spare bedroom, and moments later, Danzele Johnson fell into the closet beside him.

Layman noticed that there was a growing stain of blood on his friends chest, and then he noticed that he too had been shot and blood was pouring down his leg. Householder Rodney Scott had not been out at all — he was asleep upstairs. Upon hearing the commotion, he grabbed his handgun. Not knowing that the intruders were unarmed teenagers, he opened fire, hitting Layman in the leg and Johnson in the chest. Johnson died.

So began the case that has become known as the “Elkhart Four.” According to the Guardian, when Police arrived at the house, Layman was face down on the floor saying “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” over and over. Layman and the members of the Elkhart Four were arrested and charged with felony murder.

According to ABC 57, Elkhart County prosecutor Curtis Hill explained the use of a felony murder charge.

“Under Indiana law when you are in the midst of committing criminal behavior and one is killed as a result there of, felony murder is an available charge.”

At their trial, three of the Elkhart Four were convicted and sentenced as adults to 55 years in a maximum security prison for a shooting that they did not carry out. The fourth member of the Elkhart Four, Quiroz pleaded guilty under a plea deal and was given 45 years.

Tulsa Police Identify Two Men Killed During Home Invasion
Mar 12, 2015

Police say two men died in a home invasion in east Tulsa overnight.

Officers said a resident at the Suzanne Apartments on 12th Street near Mingo told them he shot two men after they broke into his apartment at about 2:30 a.m. Police said Kejuan Shields, 22, and Demario Harris, 34, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a third intruder escaped by climbing out a rear window.

Detectives spent most of the night processing evidence, finding evidence of a struggle inside the apartment. They questioned the two residents in the apartment and released them.

A woman who said she is the mother of the man who shot the two intruders had left minutes before the shooting and was concerned for her son's safety. She says Joshua is a paraplegic after he was shot in July 2011.

Police says one of the three men who broke into the apartment was armed.

Police Sgt. Dave Walker says they are looking for the third man who jumped out of the window. He was described as a black male, about 5'7" tall, 150 pounds and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

Officers said they found bullet holes believed fired in the apartment at an apartment building nearby.

According to Oklahoma Department of Corrections records. Kejuan Shields was released from prison in 2014 for a Tulsa County conviction for felon possessing a firearm and Demario Harris was released from prison in 2006 for numerous drug possession convictions.

With all this talk of the racism at OU recently, it's good to see a story where five kids of different ethnic backgrounds can work together for the common evil.

By the way, elkharttruth.com seems kind of pro-criminal, and by "kind of", I mean extremely.

Police: Alabama woman who shot home invader shot by officers after failing to drop her weapon
Published April 20, 2015

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Police in Alabama say officers shot a woman who had shot an intruder during a home invasion after she didn't drop her weapon.

Huntsville police spokesman Lt. Darryl Lawson tells AL.com the woman's estranged husband came into the house she shared with her mother armed with a gun Sunday afternoon. The woman opened fire with a shotgun, wounding him.

Her mother called 911 and when police arrived, they heard gunshots and saw the woman in the garage holding the shotgun. They demanded she drop the weapon and when she turned toward them with the gun in her hand, at least one officer fired.

Officers say the estranged husband's injuries are life threatening. The woman is expected to survive.

Lawson says the officer who shot the woman has been placed on administrative leave.

Shotgun blast, adrenaline pumping, she probably didn't hear correctly. She turned toward a noise and presented a threat. Unfortunate, but I wouldn't call it a bad shoot.

May 13, 2015

kotv.images.worldnow.com_images_7752217_G.jpg

Police said a Tulsa homeowner shot a man who was screaming and banging on her door.

Officers got the call to the house in the 1400 block of South Quincy just before midnight.

Police Captain Thomas Bell said the homeowner first thought her husband was returning home early, but then heard banging, screaming and breaking glass.

Bell said the woman fired three shots through the door, hitting the man in the head, shoulder and upper chest.

EMSA took the unidentified man to the hospital in serious condition. The woman was not injured.

Police said they're investigating to determine what charges should be filed against the man who was shot.

Tough call there... I woulda said she was in the wrong and should not have fired until it mentioned breaking glass. Still not sure, maybe he was in a panic because he was being chased, had already been shot, saw a crime, saw a car on fire in the driveway or whatever - and he was so hyped up trying to get someone to come out he accidentally broke the glass on the door. I can see that happening, maybe. Bottom line is, you need to be very sure someone is actually attempting to enter your home against your wishes, not just trying to wake you up to notify you of something or get help.

There seems to be more to the story that we aren't getting.

Anytime you shoot through a door, you're on thin ice. I would never do it, but I could see how a lady at home alone, or with kids, would not want to wait until they actually entered the house.
