A man entered a busy shopping mall in Minnesota and stabbed eight people while referencing Allah and asking at least one victim if he was Muslim, according to the St. Cloud police chief.

The news agency for ISIS released a statement claiming the St. Cloud attack and calling the unidentified suspect a “soldier” for the Islamic State. Authorities had not verified the claim.

The suspect – who has not been identified – was wearing a private security uniform and armed with a knife during the September 17 mass attack, according to St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson. The mass stabbing occurred around the same time that an explosion in Manhattan horrified and fixated the country.

“The executor of the stabbing attacks in Minnesota yesterday was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to calls to target the citizens of countrys belonging to the crusader coalition,” said the statement by Amaq Agency, the news agency for ISIS.

Administration officials said Friday that the 10,000 Syrian refugees President Obama wants to welcome this fiscal year is a floor, not a ceiling, and they can go even higher than that total.

“We can now say that we’ve welcomed 8,000 Syrian refugees so far this year and we are very confident we will welcome at least 10,000,” Assistant Secretary of State Anne C. Richard told reporters in updating the flow.

At today’s pace, more than 12,000 refugees could be admitted by the end of September, which marks the end of the fiscal year.

Those are part of the 85,000 total refugees from around the world that Mr. Obama has said he can accept.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Leon Rodriguez said he’s confident his officers can screen out potential terrorists and other bad actors even without access to the tools Mr. Comey said are important.

Mr. Rodriguez said they query U.S. government databases to see if there’s any derogatory information about an applicant, and said his officers do review the social media presence of “some” Syrian applicants.

Mr. Rodriguez said those checks have blocked “literally hundreds” of Syrians from gaining access. He said they approved 80 percent of applicants, have denied 7 percent, and have the other 13 percent on hold.

Top administration security experts, including FBI Director James Comey, had previously sounded warnings about Syrian refugees, saying that while they can query U.S. databases, they don’t have access to databases in Syria, nor do they have on-the-ground access needed for a more complete picture.

The increase in Syrian refugees has been controversial, particularly after some refugees were implicated in terrorist attacks in Europe over the last year. In addition, one man admitted as an Iraqi refugee, but who came from Syria, was charged in the U.S. earlier this year with supporting terrorists.

Obama sent out a tweet in September saying that the U.S. would increase the number of refugees we accept to 100,000 yearly for the next two years. And Secretary of State John Kerry has since said that amount would double, to 200,000.

That’s a figure that GOP candidate Donald Trump labeled “insane.” And indeed it is.

The Latest: Somali father IDs son as Minnesota mall attacker

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) -- The Latest on the stabbing of eight people at a central Minnesota shopping mall (all times local):

3:30 p.m.

The father of the man who stabbed nine people at a central Minnesota mall has identified him as a 22-year-old college student.

Ahmed Adan told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that police told him Saturday night that his son, Dahir A. Adan, died at Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud.

He says police didn't mention the attack on the mall, but they seized photos and other materials from the family's apartment.

Authorities haven't publicly identified the attacker. They say the attacker stabbed nine people Saturday night before an off-duty police officer shot and killed him. None of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries.

Ahmed Adan, who is Somali, says his son came to the U.S. 15 years ago and was was a student at St. Cloud Technical and Community College. He told the Star Tribune he had "no suspicion" that his son might have been involved in terrorist activity.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

An FBI official says investigators are viewing an attack at a Minnesota mall in which a man stabbed nine people as a possible act of terrorism.

FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Rick Thornton said Sunday that authorities are digging into the suspect's background to determine his possible motivation for Saturday night's attack at the Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud.

St. Cloud's mayor and police chief praised the swift actions of an off-duty, part-time Avon police officer for shooting and killing the attacker. They identified him as Officer Jason Falconer.

Mayor David Kleis says there were nine people who were hurt, not eight, as authorities previously reported. He says the ninth person took themselves to a hospital and was treated and released. Three of the victims remain hospitalized with injuries that aren't considered life-threatening.

Three college freshmen who were shopping at a Minnesota mall when a man stabbed eight people say they saw two bloodied men stumble from a hallway.

Sydney Weires (weerz) says she was at Crossroads Center mall with two friends Saturday night when they heard a scream. She says she saw a man who looked like a security guard sprint down a hallway, and then two men stumbled out.

She says one had blood on his face, and the other had blood on his back. The men screamed to get out of the mall because someone had a knife.

Weires says she and her friends ran out of the mall.

Authorities say all of the injured are expected to survive. They say the suspect was dressed in a private security uniform and reportedly made references to Allah.

An off-duty police officer shot and killed him.

This attack and the NYC/NJ bombings both happened at the same time - 7 days after the 9-11 anniversary. It is likely that these events were coordinated. But the official media/government line is not to worry, they are not likely connected to international terrorism so "no worries". Riiiight.

The sky is definitely not falling. The odds of you or I being injured or killed by a terrorist are quite small. But the apparent decision by leadership to placate the public and ignore one attack after another is a dysfunctional abdication of responsibility. We are being conditioned to accept terrorism as the new normal.

5 people taken into custody in connection with Chelsea explosion

Sources say 5 people were taken into custody in connection with Saturday's bombing in Chelsea.

At 8:45 p.m. Sunday the FBI and NYPD conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle of interest in the investigation into the bombing.

The men were in a car stopped on the Belt Parkway. They were headed from Staten Island to Brooklyn on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

'Possible live bomb' found at Elizabeth train station, mayor says

ELIZABETH — Authorities are investigating a suspicious package at the Elizabeth train station, officials said.

According to Mayor Christian Bollwage two men found the package in a waste basket on North Broad Street and Julian Place around 9:30 p.m.

The men took the package "because they thought it was of some value," walked for a bit, then saw wires and a pipe, dropped the package and notified Elizabeth Police.

The Union County Bomb Squad was called in and used a drone to examine the package, the mayor said.

"The drone indicated it could be suspicious and it could be a live bomb," Bollwage said.
