IIRC, once a certain number of electric cars are sold, the subsidies go away, so not everyone signing up for the car will get the tax credit. Or something like that.

That's for the buyers. My understanding is that Tesla is getting, or already received some pretty lucrative government assistance...

Because they release their discoveries in an open-source platform, other manufacturers are now using their technologies, instead of Tesla keeping it all to themselves. It's a totally different way to approach the entire system, and although an ideal infrastructure isn't in place yet, Tesla has created the spark that will fuel massive changes.

Not exactly. You can use Tesla's IP, but, in exchange, you have to allow them to use yours. The other manufacturers aren't exactly lining up for that deal.
