It’s also the first electric automobile with a range of more than 300 miles.

I hope Tesla designed those cars so they can be retrofitted with a gasoline engine at some point - like for when those batteries fail or are no longer available.

Does anyone know if Tesla or anyone producing (or buying) electric cars receives special tax incentives or subsidies? If so, what does the future hold for those cars when they have to be a viable, unsubsidized, marketable commodity?

There wouldn't be any way to retrofit. Why wouldn't the batteries be available? They are just a bunch of 18650 cells.

Tesla buyers receive the full $7,500 tax credit (subsidized with YOUR tax money).

One more reason to repeal the 16th Amendment and the income tax. The income tax allows the Feral Government to "incentivize" behavior through such credits and subsidies to no one's benefit but to those in government.

the switch to renewable energy would happen on it's own purely due to technology advancements reducing costs while increasing performance.
where the difference is .. time for it to actually happen .. tax incentives accelerates the economics and makes it possible to bring a new technology to the marketplace.

look at the massive $$$ tax dollars already poured into say A123 which did a belly flop with tax payer funded technologies ending up with Chinese owners. vs Tesla has already made it's technologies freely available to anyone.

what makes it all work is Tesla delivering a world class product!!!
like it or not the world is changing ... we've just had the HOTTEST July in history with more coming .. with scary things happening like MASSIVE frozen methane deposits getting released by global warming. etc. etc.

screw worrying about why global warming is happening .. let's worry about consequences what's happening right now .. permafrost melting is releasing all sorts of nasties .. from releasing mega huge deposits of methane to large numbers frozen deer carcasses that died from Anthrax and is now spreading, etc. etc.

if that happens .. planting millions and millions of trees may be the only way to save our climate from possible massive changes. of course switching to renewable energy which Tesla cars are but a small part .. what more exciting is the solar shingles combined with home storage .. which of course fuels Tesla cars.

Elon Musk has quite the forward vision!
