Picked up a steyr m95/34 in 8x56r yesterday. The rifle is in very good condition in comparison to other similar rifles. I heard that it’s quite a punishing surplus round. Can anyone tell me if the recoil can be compared to any modern day rounds?

I have one that I shoot from time to time. I don't see it as anything spectacular as far as recoil but I have only shot the PRIVI ammo and my own reloads . . . never any surplus.

Light rifle shooting a heavy bullet. It is my heaviest felt recoil gun. Worse than a No.5 or even a Lebel carbine.

There is something about the muzzle blast as well. They really kind of suck to shoot.

The long rifles are fine in 8x56R.

BTW, they are in good condition for the same reason so many of the 91/30s are. They were refurbished in the 50s and 60s as a make work commie program, put away clean and never issued again until sold as surplus.
