I've had good food off of nearly every type of grill or smoker. Gas grills have their place and I want one for the ease of getting a hot grill on a weeknight cook. Pellet grills have their place as an easy to use smoker. I've had a Big Green Egg for 15 years and it's still my favorite. There is some magic to the BGE. It is a very good grill AND smoker. Most devices will not do both very well. I use a weed burner to get the lump charcoal fire going quickly for weeknight grills. I have done many 12 hour brisket cooks without reloading the charcoal. Kamado style grills/smokers are an amazing invention. I think the main reason for the cooking quality is that they are so well insulated. The fire can be smaller, more efficient, so less airflow and the meat doesn't dry out.
