1/16" in height and no less than 0.003" deep. Also, they must be "wholly unobstructed from plain view". In other words, they may not be placed under handguards, grips, inside mag wells, etc.

What about the latest additional requirements? I've heard there have been some changes.

When I did mine, it was first letter of first name and then complete Last name. Complete city name and the state could be abbreviated.

I called my examiner before I did mine. He told me that the engraving could not be covered by any handguard or grip, it had to be visiable without removing anything. He also said that since it was an SBR, I could engrave the barrel and not the receiver. I chose to engrave the receiver.

It's been a few years since then and I'm sure they've changed the rules.

whats are the current reg's on engraving? and where are you guys engraving your ar-15 lowers?

Southwest Engravers on Classen in OKC.

$10. She did a great job and it took under an hour. Highly recommended.

I did mine on the right side of the magwell just because I don't really care where it is. Some do under the safety on the right side, some do on front of the mag well. It's your call, just meet the specs.

I'm currently building an SBR. Here is what I understand the requirements to be:

(The requirements are found in US Code Title 27 CFR 479 and are the same if you are an importer, manufacturer of firearms for sale, or making NFA items as a non 02/07 MFR)

- You must mark the newly made NFA firearm with the S/N, Model Name or Number, *your* Name, City, State and the caliber or gauge. If you used the S/N, Model and caliber from the original Title I firearm, then you're already half-way there as far as markings go ...

- Accepted abbreviations may be used for your name (i.e., your ititials), city & state. Ex: John Q. Public, Anywhere, PA can be marked as JQ Public, ANY PA. Trust names may NOT be abbreviated

- The S/N must be marked on the receiver or frame, and must be no less than 1/16" in height and no less than 0.003" deep.

- The remaining information (name, city, state, model and caliber) may be placed EITHER on the receiver OR the barrel, and must be no less than 0.003" deep. There are no minimum height requirements for these markings.

- All required markings must be in Roman letters (English) and Arabic numerals (1,2,3 ...), and be "wholly unobstructed from plain view". In other words, they may not be placed under handguards, grips, inside mag wells, etc.

So since I used the factory SN, etc. my name, town, state are all that I need to add. They can be as small as I like, as long as they are .003 deep. At least that's my personal understanding. If I'm wrong please let me know.

I have a Form 1 in the papermill right now on which I intentionally left block 4H blank. If it gets approved, as is, I am not going to engrave a thing. If it gets bounced back, I will have the trust name and location engraved when I send it off to have the stock attached.

One of my ARs is engraved on the starboard side of the magazine well. It is totally covered up by my redi-mod. I guess that I should get it engraved someplace more visible, but I just don't really care that much.
