Latest stamp showed up!

My stamp came back for my AK SBR. Red Jacket will be receiving my AK with a box of other stuff to create a crazy custom shorty that is sure to ring ears at the range.


This is not my first soiree with AKs, but it is my biggest, albeit shortest, thus far. This project started as a cheap blaster after I learned that Draco pistols are semi-legitimate as far as AKs go. Once I learned that I could add a fixed stock trunnion, Romanian side folding stock, and AIMR type flash suppressor and have a clone of a Romanian AIMR I was hooked. Since then, I fell into my all-to-familiar mistake of spending days on end in hotels with a laptop and a credit card. I decided not to do the AIMR and to build a crazy custom instead. Now my cheap blaster is over budget by almost three times and gets more expensive as the days go by. Lesson learned, I did not need to buy the Draco if I was just going to end up using it for a few parts. NDS receiver would have been about $300 cheaper. Oh well. It's just a game, Focker.


On a side note, the form was approved without anything in block H, so there are no, nor will there be any, extra engravings.



I'll post pictures in August or September when Will completes the build.

Would love to see pics when you get that done. I was thinking of doing an AK almost exactly the same way.

I would be willing to bet that the lack of engraving will never be an issue and the worst that ATF would do if it ever did become an issue would be that they have you engrave it or they would take it, engrave it themselves and send it back to you (I know of one old form 1'd MG they did that to). However, the fact that they approved your form 1 without anything in block H does not in the slightest way prove that engraving is not required. Like I said, I doubt you will ever have a problem, but you are still wrong for not engraving it.

I've seen some examples of 'fix it tickets' occurring, but I've also seen some letters that contradict the letters that say that people Form 1ing weapons that were originally built by someone else still have to be engraved. I'm still of the opinion that unless I'm building a silencer from a tube or an AK or AR out of an 80% receiver I am not the builder. Either way, the purpose of the engraving is to be able to trace the gun back to me, which it can based on the serial number and other markings.




I'll get it engraved if I ever decide to take it to the BoA at Hollywood Hills, but for now it will remain engraving-free.

can I ask a couple questions.
why did you form 1 it if your not doing the actual build?
It is now a class3 gun and you will have to transfer it to them to be worked on.
Then they will have to transfer it back to you.
why didn't you have them just build it then transfer to you.

I initially purchased a Draco pistol with the idea that I could put the original folder on myself so I sent off the Form 1 with that in mind. When I decided that I was probably not equipped to drill out and re-rivet the rear trunnion, I started shopping for an AK-smith to do my dirty work. In the mean time, I decided to go a totally different direction with it.

If I had known three months back that I would be going this direction, I would have had Red Jacket build the gun and transfer it to me through the Major. I've got my eye on another Red Jacket AK and that is likely how it will go down next time.

Crap I forgot to try leaving that blank when I submitted mine for my shotgun last month. Good news is they finally cashed my freaking check after almost 5 weeks. It's never taken that long. I've been looking at doing an AK too Rob so keep me in the loop too!

I completely changed my mind about the direction of this AK build again. I decided that I wanted to keep the Draco as correct as possible so I built it into an AIMR. To do that to my Draco I simply tracked down and bought a Romanian Mod.63 grip, Romanian laminate palmswell handguards, Romanian muzzle nut, Romanian Mod.63 rear trunnion, and Romanian push-button side-folding stock. I completed it with a Romanian nylon sling.

I had Firing Line up in Wyandotte install my trunnion for me. They did an excellent job and did it very quickly.

I still want a Red Jacket custom shorty, but it may have to wait after some of the shorties that I fondled while visiting Firing Line.
