Correct me if I'm wrong. I'll still call the NFA office before I get it done.

It is still acceptable to engrave the barrel of an SBR or SBS and not the receiver. Yes or No?

I know I have to have the full trust name listed with city and state. I want to get it engraved one the barrel below the factory markings. Not obstructed by the handguard.

I can't be sure, but I'd think no, since the barrel can be removed from the registered receiver.

From the ATF NFA Handbook, Chapter 7: http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5320-8/atf-p-5320-8-chapter-7.pdf

7.4.2 Additional information
Certain additional information must also be conspicuously placed on the frame, receiver, or barrel of the firearm by engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), that is, they must be placed in such a manner that they are wholly unobstructed from plain view. For firearms manufactured on or after January 30, 2002, this information must be to a minimum depth of .003 inch.
The additional information includes:
(1) The model, if such designation has been made;
(2) The caliber or gauge;
(3) The manufacturer’s name (or recognized abbreviation); and
(4) The city and State (or recognized abbreviation) where the manufacturer maintains its place of business

What ever the FRAME of the weapon is is where I was just instructed to place the engraving. Called the WV office and was instructed to engrave the frame of the weapon.

When I did mine, I was told that it could be on the barrel. I chose to go ahead and put it on the lower receiver.

My reasoning was that the receiver was the registered part of the rifle, even though the purpose of the registration was the short barrel.

I was told for my SRB that im about to start I have to engrave the lower. I plan to do that so I dont have to re-engrave it if I want to replace the bbl for what ever reason.

No you cannot engrave the barrel UNLESS it is in plain view of all. I just engraved my receiver. Much easier and no questions later.

IT MUST BE IN PLAIN VIEW.
