Well, I have a few questions that the wonderful people of OSA might be able to answer for me...

I know about the revocable trust route or CLEO sign off route, tax stamps, Form 1 & 4's...yada yada..

Ok, I want to know, Can a civilian own a MG(assuming BATF clears you to do so) without being a Class I, II or III dealer? I have heard sooo many answers and none have anything to back it up.

I'm really looking for a .22 caliber MG, will $2,000-$4,000 get me somewhere?

Get off my lawn.
The answer to the first question is MOST DEFINITELY.

BUT...

You need more money for a MG. The cheapest you're going to get into a machine gun is probably around $3000 for an M11/9. IIRC they make .22 kits for them, but I don't really know. If you want say a full auto 10/22 then a Norrell trigger pack is for you and you're looking at somewhere around $10,000 I believe. If you want a cool gun and to shoot .22 you can look at the Ruger AC556. That is a .223 rifle like a Mini-14 that is select fire. They have .22 conversions for them that seem to work pretty well. They usually go for around $6000-$7000 I believe.

You will have to find one that was in the NFA registry, prior to it being closed in 1986. Find what you want for sale, commonly referred to as a "transferable MG", and it will transfer on a form 4, just like any other NFA item. The problem arises in that no new civilian transferable MGs have been made since 1986, thus freezing the supply, and demand has gone super high for them. It has been a while since I priced any MG's, but $4k won't get you much.

I own 2 MG's and I am just an individual, not any type of dealer. Like the others have already said, you will not get into anything full-auto without spending a lot of money. Your best best would be to buy an M11/9 9mm SMG (around $3,000) and then buy one of Richrad Lage's .22LR conversion kits (around $500).

As far as where to shoot. There are some ranges that allow full-auto and if you know of a friend with some land you could always shoot there. You cannot shoot full-auto at any of the state WMA ranges.

Ya, if i cant find a range to shoot locally. I got a few hundred acres in Hughes County...

It looks like my starter SMG is gonna be a M11...until I can convince my wife to sell one of our trucks to get a AK...

M11 is a good starter package. I'll chime in and say that IF you can swing the extra, you might consider going the Uzi route. Prices have dropped in the last few years and I've seen some in the 5500 range. I have both the M11 and the Uzi. My "go to" full auto is the Uzi. Personal preference only, but a good all around package.

The advantages I see of the Uzi over the M11 are the availability of parts and caliber conversion kits. Conversion kits for the Uzi include .22, 5mm (training) and 45cal. Right now, Uzi mags are dirt cheap and they last forever. M11 factory mags are Zytel and can break. And they are pricier than Uzi mags.

The M11 was my first FA. I have mine converted to Sten mags. Although, Sten mags are getting harder to find and going up in price, much like Grease Gun mags.

There are alot of accessories for the M11 and the Lage accessories are top shelf. Richard Lage is a good guy who stands behind his work also.

If you watch some of the boards, you might be able to get the M11 under 3K. The economy makes it a buyers market. Don't pop a woodie over the first gun you see. And you might consider a counter offer to someone's asking price. Finding one in Oklahoma has the advantage of fewer transfers and less cost, so you might want to make a few WTB posts and see what turns up.

One final word of warning. And this one is VERY IMPORTANT. Full-Auto-itis is an addictive disease. Once you start, there is no stopping. There is no turning back. You will find yourself looking at case price points for ammo instead of box prices. You will measure your range time not in hours, but in rounds fired. You will scan the boards looking for good deals on extra magazines, realizing that it is easier to load mags at the house than at the range. You will find yourself wishing, wanting and dreaming of other FA goodies. You will fondly stroke your FA and lust after your friend's FAs. It is a sickness for which there is no known cure.
