So I'm looking at a 14.5" barrel

A pistol doesn't require registration, but the receiver must be sold as a pistol or a receiver. You cannot make a rifle lower into a pistol IIRC.

So I have a stripped noveske lower I just got friday. If it's never been shot or made into anything, I can slap a pistol buffer tube on it and get a short barrel?

So essentially, I can get a pistol buffer tube, stick it on my lower, get the 11.5" SBR and put it on (with no VFG) and shoot it until my tax stamp comes in making my pistol lower a SBR?

I was all set to get a 14.5" + blackout, which changed to a 14.5" + brakeout, which changed to 11.5" + pistol buffer tube until I get stamp tax. Can't. Make. Up. Mind.

the form 4473 the dealer filled out should have it listed as a frame, not a pistol or long gun. But it's really what configurations it's been in that matter more than the 4473, if it has EVER had a butstock, it is forever a long gun, or SBR.

I'm not sure what the form 4473 said, but I got it from the FFL as a stripped lower.

On the topic of engraving SBRs: According to the ATF's NFA Handbook, section 7.4.2 (http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5320-8/atf-p-5320-8-chapter-7.pdf), your name/city/state can be engraved on the barrel instead of the receiver or frame as long as it's unobstructed from plain view. So could you engrave it on the barrel under a handguard with lots of holes in it so you could look into the handguard and read the engraving? It wouldn't really be any less "obstructed" than placing it next to the trigger on the bottom of the lower receiver.

Yes, you could engrave the barrel, however I see no advantage to engraving it over the receiver. If you engrave the receiver you can put additional SBR uppers on it with no additional engraving. If you engrave the barrel, then you need to engrave every SBR barrel you plan on putting on your lower.

Good point. Hmm.

So for now, I'm sticking with the 14.5" + AAC brakeout 51T. I'm not sure where I'm PCSing after this, so I don't want to waste a $200 stamp tax and $600 upper. Thanks for the help everyone!

My next build will be again from a stripped lower and I'll add a pistol buffer tube and 7.5" + KX3 or 11.5" + AAC blackout 51T brake.

And someone convinced me to get the 11.5" and I agree now.

Is putting a muzzle brake on a short barrel as bad of an idea as I think? The point of a KX3 is to push all the concussive force forward... the point of a muzzle brake/compensator is to point it sideways / backwards. As the KX3 was designed specifically for SBRs... is putting a brake on a SBR exacerbating an existing condition?
