AAC now has a division specifically for hunters. This was swiped from their website but I think they make good points as to why suppressors for hunting is beneficial. I think these points should be brought to lawmakers and pushed.

Always Use Protection
By reducing the overall sound signature, silencers help protect the shooter, and those around, from tinnitus, or irreversible hearing loss. Tinnitus can result from single shot exposure.

Firearm Control
Silencers improve accuracy by minimizing recoil and muzzle blast, allowing shooters to focus on the fundamentals of shooting.

Better Accuracy
AAC's silencers also improve accuracy by promoting the harmonic stabilization of the barrel and reducing gas-induced instability when the projectile exits the muzzle.

Camouflage
Silencers disguise the location of the shooter by reducing muzzle flash and minimizing environmental disturbances.

Youth Shooters
By mitigating the concussive effects of firearms, silencers allow young shooters to safely and quickly learn how to shoot.

Command and Control
Silencers help users maintain command and control by enabling shooters to communicate both at the range and in the field.

Night Vision
While predator hunting, AAC's silencers prevent "blooming" of night vision equipment and help preserve unaided night vision by eliminating muzzle flash.

I've sent an email to the Oklahoma Dept of Wildlife with some questions. I would like to know some definitive answers to these. Suppressors cost too much and we have to wait too long for a warden to confiscate one (or worse) because we/he doesn't know the rules. I'll post the response if I get one. Here is my email:

I am wanting to know some specific regulations regarding suppressors. The regulation book states that hunters are not allowed to use "silencers" for game.

1. Could you define what "game" is? what animals if any are not classified as game?

2. What animals may be taken using a firearm with a suppressor?

3. If an animal such as a coyote or wild hog is destroying property or is a threat, is it unlawful to kill the animal using a firearm equipped with a suppressor?

4. Does ownership of the land have any affect on the regulation?

5. Is it unlawful to be in possession of a suppressor while hunting on private land?

Thank you very much for your assistance. I would appreciate any help you may be able to provide. It is my intentions to use these answers and this correspondence as a guide before purchasing a suppressor and to use it if there is any question from a game warden.

I would not limit my sound suppressor purchase reasons to hunting, as the greatest value is in target practice and plinking, which is currently well within legal limits. I cannot express how much more comfortable shooting paper is with a suppressor. If I can someday use for hunting then that will be an added benefit. Now if you have no place to plink besides a public range, then the plinking benefit is lost and I would correct that situation first.

The response:

1. Game is any hunted animal that has not been domesticated.
2. No animals being hunted may be taken with a silencer.
3. It is unlawful to use a silencer when hunting coyotes of wild hogs
destroying property.
4. Ownership of the land has no effect on this law.
5. It is illegal to be in possession of a suppressor when hunting on
private land.

The best thing to do before you buy a silencer or suppressor, is contact
your counties Game Warden. For me the lines are fuzzy regarding feral
hog because they are neither wild nor domesticated but I believe they
are still considered game.

I would sure like to see some sort of legislation go through to at least allow it for varmints & hogs.
