Is SBRing an AR worth it?

So I woke up this morning and looked at my 10.5" and my 16" ARs. Yes there's a 5.5" difference in barrel length, but that's really shorter than the length of my hand. Looking back at it, was that small difference in length worth $200 and 3 months of waiting?

I'm thinking the only reason to SBR now would be for suppressed use because how much size and weight it adds to the end of the rifle. In the future, a 14.5" + 1.6" FH (Vortex or BC 1.5) is probably the way to go.

Which is kind of why I want to go down to 7.5" SBR; if you're gonna SBR, go realllllly short.

If you want to go even shorter and not have to worry about reliability of the weapon or voiding warrantys on suppressors then go with a 9mm or .22

Identical ARs besides one has a 10.5" barrel and the other has a 16" barrel. M4-2000 adds 5.1". Now you have the equivalent of a 15.6" barrel and a 21.1" barrel. 21.1" is getting out of the realm of a usable weapon in the house.

I've also wondered if SBR was worth the paperwork and tax stamp - if you're not getting into suppressors. From a purely financial and practical perspective, it seems like a 14.5" with pinned muzzle device bringing it out to 16+" is the way to go.

I agree.

I wanted to do the NFA paperwork actually, I wanted to have actual experience with the process.

SBR'ing has much more to do with the "coolness factor" in a civilian rifle than anything else.

IMO no it is not. I don't personally see any time I will be using my AR that an extra $200 is worth having the shorter barrel. If you were to suppress it then I could understand it but for me, personally, I'd never go that route.

Others have different needs/wants and/or more money than I do.

Same here. I think the Govt should pay me $200 bucks to shorten my barrel if they want me to make it a little less lethal. JMO

I don't understand. SBR'ing isn't making it more or less lethal. Its just another step of customization to ines collection. Atleast it is for me. I have an idea of how my gun should be built and build it that way. It sucks to pay a $200 tax but atleast its 100% legal.
