So... If the upper was a rifled .410 slug barrel and the lower was a pistol lower it would be a handgun? Sweet jeebus firearms laws are retarded!
thats how a Taurus judge is a pistol and not an aow. if the bore was smooth it would be an aow.

Exactly. And on another note, Taurus was going to come out with a 28 gauge version of the Judge, but since 28 gauge is .55" diameter it would fall under the NFA as a DD.

I haven't heard anything new on it for months. The last I heard Taurus was looking at constricting the muzzle down to .50" (in effect making a very tight choke).

I heard they weren't makin the judge at all! Its no longer on taurus website. They prob figured it woukdnt be worth it cause if you were wearing shoes while shooting it, thus having a firearm and a un registered mg parts(the shoelaces, unless you wear slip on boots like myself), then they could nail ya on constructive intent. I can just see the headlimes now "redneck arrested on attempts at fabricating a massive anti aircraft hand machinegun(cannon)"

Long story long, taurus didn't wanna deal with the r tards at the atf.

As far as the 308 ar pattern shotgun, tell me more! I hope you aren't referring to the akdal? I emailed cmmg and they said they weren't pursuing their 308 ar pattern 12ga

Would the "very tight choke" slow down the pellets or the wad, or cause the pellets at the rear to spread out because of how water behaves in a hose?

The tighter the choke the tighter the pattern. Just google "shotgun choke" and you will find plenty of info about chokes.

But... but that's not what they're saying in an ongoing thread over on the Rifles/Shotguns forum. Or are they? I was so confused reading that thread ;)

I think everyone over in that thread agrees on the fact that chokes work, where we/they disagree is the physics behind why they work and what is happening to the load.

But to keep this thread on topic, I have no idea if the 28 GA Judge Project is a go or not.

I do not know what is being said in the other thread that you mentioned, but here is a nice explaination from Briley Mfg. (a leading manufacturer of shotgun chokes).

Ok, so how does a shotgun choke actually work? Let us begin first with an easy metaphor, a child in out in the back yard playing with a garden hose. He discovers that if he puts his thumb on the end of the hose it goes further. That, kind of, is similar to what happens with a shotgun. Now for the scientific explanation by a nuclear engineer named Robert Hedrick. In a nutshell, his computer model and 35 years of research explains it in this way. There are two forces that tell the story; the mechanical properties while the shot column is in the barrel and the dynamic forces of nature that affect the shot column after it exits the barrel. When the shot column meets up with the choke it forces the column to squeeze tighter together; these forces are called radial forces. Once it is out of the barrel, wind resistance and gravity act on it. When the wind comes into contact with the outside pellets of the shot column it induces spinning and they start to flare off like a ping pong ball with english on it. The tighter the choke the heavier the radial forces, the tighter the pellets are squeezed together so the pattern holds tighter over a longer distance. Conversely, the less restriction you have in the shotgun choke the more loosely the pellets are held together and the faster the pattern opens up.

There you have it! You now know more about shotgun chokes than 98 percent of the shooters in the world.
