I have a 10" with a TAC-16 and it is hearing safe outdoors and wouldn't blow out ears inside (If used sparingly, I wouldn't suggest shooting indoors for fun without protection). It's quieter than a .22 pistol if you need a reference...

Like OKC said. A 10" 223 is not too bad with a silencer on it. Without the can it's about as loud as a 5" MK45. I use mine when I dont want anyone to sit next to me at the range. I couldn't see going any shorter on a 223
