Schools can't pay for paper, pencils and crayons as is (a bit of an exaggeration). A month from now, well after wall-to-wall coverage by MSM, there won't be enough public support to finance shelters for every school. I haven't seen any locals calling for school shelters. I don't mean to say there aren't any. I just haven't them. However, I've seen every cable 'news' talking head (outsider) bring it up. It's like watching them in NO after Katrina suggesting that every school should have a giant escape capsule. It's judgemental and it's irritating.

i know you can't prevent it ALL, but you do have a better chance to survive when prepared...besides, how many of you sleep with a loaded gun by the bed? am i right?!!

True; many who'd argue that "it's so rare" and just shrug it off are likely some of the same group who have a CCW and carry a handgun. You could also do a comparison with fire extinguishers and smoke alarms.

I still say factor in about two "severe weather" days. That costs virtually nothing, other than to a parent who may miss some work to stay home with the kids.

It used to be the norm, not because it was required but by choice/necessity/lack of alternative. Not perfect or the best but you have to wonder how many they saved.

I'm all for it going to a bond election and letting the locals decide for their district. Like people have said before, it could be as simple as some big, concrete pipes or tunnels buried near the playgrounds to allow kids to be herded in. There will never be a perfect solution and it should be done with respect for the tax payer's dollar (fantasy, I know), but I think it's reasonable in certain areas. Moore is one, maybe north Edmond and Piedmont as well. I think state wide blanket implementation is dumb, but it is a good idea for a district to look at their needs and propose a local vote. It seems to me, that's the way our system is actually designed to function...so I'm sure that's not how it will go.

And don't forget...their vote to increase local taxes when passing the bond issue to build them. Money has to come from somewhere and the state already has more unfunded mandates in education than you can shake a stick at.

^^THIS^^

I'm already getting sick of people all over the place saying that it should be REQUIRED for all schools to have shelters or safe rooms, implying that older building be retro-fitted to have them. Problem is that once something is required by the state or federal govt. school districts will have to follow it. Budgets are too thin already. I'm all for FUTURE building codes that require safe rooms or shelters but retro-fitting thousands of schools across the state would be a huge task and require (don't forget that large schools have student bodies well over 1k) insanely huge safe rooms. I'm all for individual districts to hold bond elections to pay for these things. I would gladly shell out a couple of bucks a year to know that my kids chances were a little better than now.

This forum, above most others, should understand that tragedies do not get solved by knee jerk reactions.

mandating safe rooms only makes sense for areas like Moore. which has been hit multiple times by tornado. for some reason Moore's location ends up being where tornado touches down. easy to look up historical data to verify this ..

otherwise mandating safe rooms in areas that's never been hit by tornado a huge waste of $$$$....
don't get me wrong .. this is tornado alley, where violent storms can hatch anywhere. if historical data says your area has never been in the last 100 years ... odds are in your favor... but one never knows, safe rooms should be voluntary in all but the most dangerous zones.

I can't wrap my mind around the fact that so many people are willing to have their neighbors threatened with force over something that doesn't have a thing to do with them, like whether they build a storm shelter or not. People have forgotten the art of minding their own damn business.

Government schools are a little different. As long as they are going to exist, they do need to have standards. However, I would prefer that these standards be set as locally as possible.
