76 sounds new enough for internally regulated. I'm betting it's that dura crap they sell. I worked at auto zone 2 weeks good riddance! My main story is they knocked over a cart of rotors and cracked a few and just filed them away to be sold.
having the battery and alternator tested would be a good starting point.
Possible, as both types were around, and I think GM was one of the first with internal regulators. I just don't recall.
I just looked. 1969 was the last year of the external Voltage regulators.

As Dennis said, it is certainly an alternator with a built-in regulator. I also agree that you should get a better quality alternator. Have the battery checked as well. Good luck!
Even NAPA has gotten to be hit or miss, not as bad as Autozone but it still happens. Put a 100% new NAPA alternator on my dads powerstoke, drove the 8 or so miles into town, started seeing smoke from under the hood, pulled over popped the hood and the alternator was in flames. We should have just let the truck burn to the ground.....
I know what you mean. Most rebuilders are out of the country now BTW.
All of the Mechanics I know use NAPA. None use Autozone. That is why I said what I did.
The autozone rebuilt starters for my Bronco were 1/2 the size of a Ford starter. I walked out.
So much misinformation in this thread it's astounding. First off, have the battery tested. How old is it? If it is more than three or four years old replace it. Second, get yourself a voltmeter if you don't have one. While the car is running check voltage at the battery. It should be above 12.7 while running. Also check the voltage at the Alternator B+. If there is a difference you have an excessive resistance in the wiring. Also check all ground connections.
Denis what year bronco and was the starter a ford pmgr with a solenoid attached? If you walked out because they gave you that instead of a Ford 4" or 4.5" then you are mistaken as a PMGR is a MUCH better starter.
Also I will give you all a hint. Match up the pictures across each of the different parts places. If it is the same photo, then it by the same company. The company which makes the starters and alternators and many other products gives the photos to the different customers and they use them for their catalog pictures.

Also how long does the car sit between drivings? Was the battery completely dead like no lights or anything when the key was turned? If you drain a starter battery completely dead a couple times count it dead because you've already damaged it. Also trying to charge a dead or almost depleted battery with just the alternator is a good way to kill the alternator.
