I recently found out about the Sig SB15 pistol stock and have since, been interested in building a 556 pistol.

Currently I own a an AR15 with the following specs (the main stuff):
Upper Assembly
-Daniel Defense Cold Forged 16" upper

Lower Assembly
-Stag lower reciever (purchased from firearms dealer stripped around 2005)
-Rock River 2stage internals
-Magpul MOE Carbine stock.
-Hogue grip

SO here is my question:
-what are the 'cheap' legal options i have for taking my current setup and making it into a legal pistol?
-is putting a pistol upper on my current lower and replacing the stock with pistol tube/sb15 legal or does it need to be a defined 'pistol' lower?
-Finally, would i be able to say remove the barrel and rail system from my upper, replace with a pistol length barrel + rail, replace the stock on the lower, and be legal?
-or am i better off just beginning the process of building a dedicated ar pistol (in 2016 when im finally done w/ grad school)

Here is my understanding of it.

Receiver>Rifle>Pistol = NO GO
Receiver>Pistol>Rifle>Pistol>Rifle>...etc = GO

Answers to your questions based on above:

1) Cheap options? Plentiful. Legal options? None.
2) Legal? No. Stripped receiver doesn't need to be defined or logged out on 4473 as anything other than a receiver; just has to be built first as pistol.
3) No.
4) Yes but wouldn't wait. AR parts are plentiful and cheap at the moment. Get them while the getting is good. I have an upper receiver (Fwd assist and ejection port cover installed) for sale if you'd like to get started now. Wouldn't suggest barreling and completing the upper until the pistol lower is completed though.

BCM has a sale going on were they give you a free BCM FA Bolt carrier group with purchase of upper group.

I got the sig brace and a honeybadger lower @ SSP & got a complete 12.5 BCM upper (minus charging handle) for $429. Pretty excited for it to arrive.

Great! Exactly what i needed. I appreciate the input! Im still in the 'looking/researching' phase right now but i have your comment saved for when i get to the 'funds and purchasing' part!

Greetings,
I have a question about adding a Magpull AFG 2 grip to the front of a AR pistol. I know that no vertical grips may be used on a pistol but is the AFG ok?
Thanks!
John
