Cans how loud ??

On some of the shooting shows ,when have cans ,some sound like wet farts ,some it's just the bolt/slide hitting,and some sound like over amped 22's . I know some shows may amp up gain or push it down ,but hard to tell at times on these shows when a 45 with a can sounds like low power 45 or a 223 sounds like your ears would still be ringing after several rounds how supressed the cans really are.

Agreed.... I've watched a lot of online videos, read a lot of opinions, etc. Even the ones from Silencershop that have dB ratings (which is a VERY nice feature), still don't give you much info on the actual QUALITY of the sound - even though the measurable sound may be comparable, the tone or quality of the sound may make a big difference in the tolerability of sound a particular can allows.

So, I'm essentially not a whole lot closer than I was before. :/

I have a yankee hill phantom on my AR and it sounds a little quieter than a 22 pistol. The bullet makes one heck of a crack by itself and you still get the noise of the gas pushing the bolt back. I still use plugs if im shooting multiple rounds but not if im trolling through the woods with it. I have put it on a 223 bolt gun before and it performed really well, sounded like a ruger 10-22.

The absolute best way to know is to shoot some outside without hearing protection. What your ears hear from the recording isn't an accurate recreation of what it sounds like in the field. A lot of recording equipment will muffle loud sound so while comparing two sounds, the louder one may sound quieter during playback.

Subsonic ammo makes a world of difference.

I don't know if major malfunction is still around, but he used to have some data on his website about various suppressors and the amount of noise they made. If I remember correctly he may have even had some audio of the various suppressors as well.

Only 1 way to get "Hollywood" quiet and that's with a .22

My integral Ruger MKII is quieter than a pellet gun.

I am very happy with my Trident 9....with 147/158g its eerily quiet.

The 22 is quiet enough to where someone could literally shoot it in a restaurant and no one would turn around to the shooter (although it reminds you how loud POI is of a .22 round)

The 9mm is louder, but doesn't really have a report that is distinguishable as a "gunshot"

My AR with a can is hearing safe outside (IMO) and wouldn't blow eardrums inside, but is still loud...in fact, it's just under the report of a .22 pistol.

From my experience it's all about the ammo. Lower velocity rounds on my .22 sound like I'm shooting a pellet gun. In the .223, the bullet will still do its part to make noise. I have not shot sub sonic .223. But regardless it's quite enough to to bypass hearing protection.

I was skeptical of getting cans but once you own them they are awesome.
