Senator pushes to change "Stand Your Ground" law

http://okcfox.com/news/local/senator-pushes-to-change-stand-your-ground-law

The Stand Your Ground Law has been in the books since 2006, now a decade later, a proposed change.

State Senator Kevin Matthews is proposing the bill be tweaked.

Currently the law states, "A person who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force."

If changed, the law would request a retreat, if possible, before taking action.

Oklahoman Megan Peters thinks Senator Matthew's has the right idea.

"I think it's a smart call I think in most circumstances if you were to attempt to draw a weapon and defend yourself you're more likely to put yourself in greater harm," Peters said.

However, it was not hard to find folks against the idea.

"I don't think the proposed change is going to go anywhere the Stand Your Ground law has been something that has been substantive in the state of Oklahoma for a long time to make changes in that is really going to go against the majority of the people's thoughts and feelings," said one local man who wished to remain anonymous.

The proposal will be heard in February.

The Senator needs to cite cases where lives were lost without good reason. I am having a hard time understanding his justification for the proposal.
