I'd love to see the NFA tax removed but a NICS check seems unnecessary to me because we shouldn't treat a suppressor like it's a firearm.

I whole heartedly agree.

I'd imagine that step could follow. If blood doesn't run in the streets and hoards of people don't become assassins (which I obviously don't expect), then convincing people that it can't affect crime unless you already have a gun.... which is already a regulated item... should be much easier.

It wouldn't surprise me if it did pop up in some crimes, though. I don't mind making it an NICS item, if the system was quicker and more streamlined.

That's what this bill does, is remove it from the NFA ClassIII list, and make it a ClassI item which will transfer with a 4473 and a NICS check.

Ultimately I don't see it affecting criminal use of silencers at all. Anyone who wanted to suppress the noise already can. It's a hassle and expensive, and it only stops the sound. People can still see the gun, the perp's face, voices of both the perp and the victim. And it makes it less concealable. No crook is going to pay a bunch of money for a can, and I doubt many have the interest in making their own (beyond taping a bottle to something, maybe); much less access to the machinery to do so.

Basically, I don't see a suppressor as any different than a bipod or a scope. All make a weapon more efficient/effective in some way. All require the user to already have a firearm.

How's a NICS check going to prevent a silencer from being used in a crime?
How is any background check going to prevent anything from being used in a crime?

Exactly.

Same can be said about a gun lol, Feel good politics running amuck lol. Outlaws are going to get guns way easier than law abiding folks as well as a silencer if they want.
