Bill to allow guns in Oklahoma courthouses passes House

A bill that would allow elected county officials in Oklahoma to carry guns into courthouses has passed the state House.

The bill by Republican Rep. Bobby Cleveland goes to the Senate after passing the House on an 85-11 vote Monday.

It would allow elected officials with a valid handgun license to carry a firearm into the courthouses of the county in which the person was elected when he or she is performing official duties. It would not allow guns in courtrooms.

Cleveland said he's concerned about heightened emotions in the nation and that people sometimes become so angry at the government they "make rash decisions and act out against" elected officials.

The bill is endorsed by the National Rifle Association.

I don't get the NRA endorsing this bill when it sets some elected persons above those who elected them. I also don't get the Legislature spending time on this when they have much larger issues to resolve on funding regular operations with a reduced tax base.

Love the picture with the article. They are talking about concealed handgun carry and they show an AK.

Unless there is a need that I am not aware of for judges or DAs who are not trained to be carrying weapons to carry weapons in court ... I am not a fan. Too much that can go wrong with the shitbirds and their associates. Not to mention what if they fail to communicate to local LEOs and Marshals that they are on the "friends and family plan".

I get what you are saying but this bill doesn't add restrictions on rights or reduce where a gun can be carried. It increases those things. Baby steps that will assist us in putting more pressure on the legislature to get where we need to be.

Same thing was said about LEOSA on the federal level, can't say as I've noticed any impact on regular Joes. Just another example of Orwell's prescience, IMO. Further, this Legislature has shown no indication of being able to think for themselves or observe the world to understand how it works. Best example: the ability of David Boren to get his way about campus concealed carry when other states are having zero problems with it.

I'm afraid I can't agree. Give politicians special privileges and they have no incentive to give the rest of us anything. "I've got mine," and all that.

I don't disagree with your comments about the legislature but your position appears to be that everyone should be equally restricted? If you can't carry in the court house then people that work or have business there on a regular basis shouldn't either? I assure you I get it. I work in a gun free zone every day. IMO, incremental steps forward are better than no steps. The alternative may be that the steps go in the wrong direction.
