Thanks gentlemen,,,
I'm bound and determined to get to a match or three this summer.

I'll probably just embarrass myself,,,
But at least I'll have some fun.

Your first match will be a learning experience. Don't stress out on it, just plan on having fun. We all make mistakes. Just focus on the safety aspects of the match and grow your skills. There is no reason to be embarrassed.

Make sure you let them know when you are signing up that it is the first time you have a shot Steel Challenge match. I've seen an enormous amount of help and encouragement from other shooters helping to make the match as enjoyable and stress free as possible. Ask questions about the safety procedures and how to draw from the holster and re-holster. (Center-fire pistol).
Bring the gun in a bag and ask for the correct location to remove it and holster it if CFP, or otherwise leave it in the bag until directed by the Range Officer on your Squad.

Let the RO on your Squad know that it is your first time. They will provide more instruction than normal to help you. They "should" also make sure you are not having to shoot first so you get a feel of how it should be done by observing others.

I've never shot steel matches but plan to this summer. Last summer was my first go at bowling pin matches and I did terrible at each one of them. I shot nowhere near my ability. But you know what, I still had a blast and I got to see my shooting buddy win one of them.
Just go.

Thanks for the advice Mad Professor,,,
It was appreciated.

At my age (65) I don't expect to win any competition,,,
Except for maybe Power Napping.

I just shoot now for the fun and company,,,
At the last silhouette match I shot at,,,
I cam in dead last.

But, nobody on the range enjoyed their selves more than I did that day.

You gotta start somewhere. I started shooting Steel Challenge about three years ago and then started shooting the USPSA matches when they brought PCC into the mix.

I'm almost as old as Aarond, and I also pretty much just shoot for the fun of it anymore. As long as I hit the berm, I'm good. Dang handguns don't even need a front sight hardly...I mean; it's not like I can actually see 'em or anything. I'd like to shoot the Rimfire pistol at a steel challenge match though.

And you can shoot it with a rimfire pistol or rifle as well. It's a lot of fun, but if you decide to do rimfire pistol AND rifle, bring a lot of ammo. :-)

I always shoot rimfire pistol and rifle.
If anybody wants to shoot it with a rifle, I have a spare AR style .22 that I can loan, set up for shooting steel.
