I signed up for my first 10k run and gun. It's a ways out but I'm curious if others prepare for it or just wing it the day of. I'm planning to run a couple 10k races between now and then and also getting some long range shooting in. I train enough with my pistol that I'm not increasing that load. Anybody doing anything additional or just showing up and seeing how it goes?

Do NOT just wing it. I've been to a couple of them (walked them with friends but I didn't get to shoot either time because if health reasons). Running a marathon and running a RNG with gear are two completely different animals.

The last one I rolled my ankle climbing the cargo net and am STILL having trouble with swelling and tenderness. Thank goodness I had on my combat boots and not tennis shoes, like I've seen some competitors out there in.

There are a few guys here who do it twice a year, every year. It's a great event. I won't be at any others due to circumstances beyond my control but you will learn a lot about yourself and your gear.

Have fun and good luck!

Really depends upon your current physical condition and what you want to get out of it. I did the summer run n gun this year and it was my first one.

If you dont really care about your time, and you are already in good enough condition to carry 20+lbs of crap for 7.5 miles over moderately difficult terrain then you are good to go. Looked like quite a few people didn't train much for it and just walked the whole thing and took several breaks along the way. I think they probably had plenty of fun.

If you are not in good enough shape to carry 20+lbs of crap for 7.5 miles the you should train. Or if you care about your time then I would train. Maybe run your 10ks with a 20lb vest.

It would help to do some rifle shooting with the rifle laying over and weak hand only pistol and 500 yard rifle.

However you do it, it will be fun. It was the most fun I've had in a while.

Everybody has different preferences/needs for footwear. I was going for light weight so I just used my normal trail running shoes and they worked fine for me. YMMV
I'm going the trail running shoes route after all. I felt too clumsy in boots and would have needed more time to get used to them. But I'm finally up to running a 10k nonstop with a little weight. It ain't pretty, but I'm as ready as I'll ever be. One week away! Luck to everyone that's going!!!
