I plan on taking my 8-year-old son out shooting for the first time in the next week or two. I purchased a 10/22 to instruct him on. He is quite sensitive to loud noises so we will double up on the ear protection (plugs and electronic ear muffs for him). We will be going on a Sunday and would like a place that's not too busy. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have a 2A membership but its very hit or miss as to how busy they will be on Sunday mornings, I've seen from nothing to long waits.

Also does anyone know of any subsonic ammo that will reliably cycle a 10/22?

If you are in western Oklahoma, I would invite you out to a private range and let your son shoot a suppressed 10/22. I have pretty good luck with CCI standard velocity ammo in a 10/22 (with suppressor).

If you know someone who’s a member of Red Castle Gun Club, you could go as guests and try their small caliber range. On Sunday mornings, I often have seen the place empty or nearly so, especially if the weather is less than clement. But check the range schedule first for organized matches.

I've used CCI Quiet without any problems. You might want to look at a suppressed 22 for his shooting. The bolt cycling is louder than the report.

My experience has been that CC Quiet and other sub-sonics don't typically cycle semi-autos very well, and sometimes they don't cycle at all. I use a bolt action (or a semi-auto in bolt action mode on the models that allow for this) for sub-sonics. Between the sub-sonic ammo and the locked bolt, the sound goes down quite a bit.

My oldest has what used to be referred to as Asperger's. He also has a strong distaste for loud noises but likes shooting the .22 rifles for short periods at a time. We have not tried taking him to a public range yet. I wish you the best of luck and, as I'm sure you are aware, have a good exit strategy ready just in case it doesn't go well.

I've used it in a Ruger 10/22 TD and MKIV Competition and had good luck. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones or my guns are looser than some. I've also got some HUSH 22lr that I haven't tried yet. Maybe this weekend.

I just used up all my cci quiets or I would give them all to you. If you run them in a standard 10/22 like I do you will have to cycle the bolt manually like a single action, but they will still shoot fine, and might be better for a new shooter than just dumping 10 at once.

I’ve got some CCI Quiets that I’d give you too, but I’m way out in Yukon. I picked them up at my local Academy; you might check around up in your area.
