At what distance should it be sighted? I'm thinking at 100yds but I'm not sure how accurate I should expect with open sites. I hate to scope a lever gun but I may have to do it. I also discovered that it would probably be a good idea to wear a mouth piece since the kick is so violent.

25-50-100 just so you know where the bullet lands in each case if some critter was to show his head at those distances you will know where to hold.
Can't be any worse kick than a light single shot 12 gauge.
There are really good peep sights you could get instead of a scope.
I would even take it to 200 yards if i was hunting with it just too see where it hits.

I have mine sighted in about 3” high at 100 yds which allows me to make kill shots on deer and hogs easily at 200 yds.

That said, swampratt’s suggestion is a good one. No matter what distance you sight it in, shoot it at varying ranges so that you know your point of impact. That practice has allowed me to confidently make headshots on hogs everywhere from a few yards to 100 yds.

I put an XS Sights lever rail on mine with the ghost ring sights (as backup), and topped it with an Aimpoint Micro T-1. Quick, handy, and powerful; great hog medicine. I'm sighted in at 100yd, but like swampratt suggested, have checked it at closer distances so I know what to expect.

This is exactly what I did when I had my SBL, except with an R-1 to match the rifle. Worked out perfectly IMO.
