They ordered 50,000 M27s from H&K.

Each member of the rifle squad will receive the $3,000 rifle, as will others outside the squad — though the exact number has not been finalized.

It weighs 7.9lbs. Throw on the optic, mount and ammunition and they are basically carrying an M1 Garand that shoots .223. Seems pretty stupid. A 16" better spec'd steel and heat treated, mid-gas barrel would be a better and more cost effective route.

I wonder if this is the same report I read a couple of days ago about one of the european gun Mfg saying they could improve on the M4 using the same platform. Can't remember the company.

Could be. But this is a piston driven gun, which is a different animal entirely from DI. It's basically a HK416 that's been modded a little.

You pretty much cant get better than the M4 already has with the FN barrels

Mission creep occured, originally brought on board to replace the SAW (1 per squad) now everybody wants one. Full auto briefs poorly and performs even worse in the hands of most. The improved range is great, so which is it? ya want range or full auto? Sounds like a we wanna be special (as in like forces) thing.

This is not a replacement for the M-4, it is replacing the M249 Light Machine Gun, itself a 5.56 weapon. This is the equivalent of the Army's SAW

If that's the case I say more power to them. I saw several other articles that said they were replacing M4s with them, but they were comparing them to the M249, so maybe so. They were all "clickbait'ish" so I didn't post any of them. But it still seems that a piston gun is just extra weight for no benefit. DI has worked for over 50 years and they know how to work with it.
