Chronos and 260 Remington

I am kind of in the air on whether to grab a Beta Master chronograph or a Magnetospeed sport. Anybody use either or have heard of any problems? I like the Magnetospeed just because it stays with the rifle and won't be forward of the firing line at the range. In my pistol, as long as it goes BANG and the plate gets dinged I don't care much about velocity.

Second. I've been reading up on the 260 Remington (I've never shot nor really know anything about it until these last few days) and I'm curious now why the 6.5 Creedmoor gets such a hype when seems to be a short and fat 260 Remington with extremely similar ballistics. If I am reading right, I can even form the brass from .308. Anybody have thoughts on 260 compared to 6.5 Creedmoor?

Advertising is what made the Creedmoor popular.. and lack of is what killed the 260.
Here in America we like Bigger is better and when the 260 came out that was the mind set.
With tons of advertising we are beginning to think a bit differently.

Exactly my feeling as well. If you happen about the Long Range shooting forums out there you will see this very topic pop up frequently and as @swampratt stated there is a whole lot to be said for the advertising dollar. The 260 is still a very oft used caliber in the precision long range game, but the 6.5CM and even the 6CM have been in every darn gun magazine published for years now. I have a simple philosophy on LR guns and shooters, very few shooters can utilize the full potential of their weapon/scope/trigger etc. get what turns your crank, develope loads and shoot the barrel out, then if you desire a change let it happen when selecting a new barrel.

I like the Magnetospeed. Seldom do I get an error when shooting. I don't use the Magnetospeed while running an optimum charge weight developing my reloads. It "may" throw your shots off a little so I don't take any chances with it. I know approximately my speed before I hit the range with my reloads and after I have an accurate load I'll check the speed with the Magnetospeed.

I've loaded for and shot a 260 for several years now and believe it to be a wonderful cartridge. I can push 140/143gr bullets a little over 2,900fps with excellent accuracy and no pressure problems. I've found it easy to load for and easy on the shooter to shoot.

The 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x47 Lapua, and the 260 are similar. The 6.5x47 generally has a wide accuracy node and the 6.5 Creedmoor has a host of match/hunting loads to be had at the big box stores. You can find match/hunting loads through Prime Ammunition or Copper Creek Cartridge Co. for the 260. Out of the three chamberings you can probably push the 260 faster with the Creed coming in second.

If one desires you can use 308 and 243 cases to create 260 but I find that not necessary with 260 Lapua cases.

I've heard of very young shooters running this cartridge all day and enjoying it. I am interested because of the low recoil despite the extensive range it seems to have, as full power loads in my 8mm tend to get obnoxious after 15-20 rounds. I would really like to get into something of a bolt gun I can shoot all day and not discolor my shoulder.

I've heard a lot about these fancy new cartridges sticking around for a few years and then getting hard to find, but as Mr. Hargrove said, maybe I can just shoot the barrel out before I need to worry about that, no matter what I purchase.

The 260 is easy to shoot but recoil is kind of in the eyes of the beholder. A loud but soft shooting rifle can still cause a flinch. You'll be able to shoot it all day long without injury especially when shooting bullets in 120gr range.

If Remington would have marketed it to the competition shooting community its questionable whether the 6.5 Creed would have been created.

It's been around for about 20 years and I don't see it going into the dust bin anytime soon especially since Lapua makes brass for it. It's not like the Winchester/Browning creation of the 7wsm or the 243 wssm.

Start shooting cast loads for the kids and you will also enjoy them.. weak firecracker report and almost 22 lr recoil.
I use Red dot 11.5gr in my 30-06 and 170gr gas checked cast bullets.
I have also shot 150 and 168 jacketed with the same load.. those are in the 1200- 1300 fps and the cast is 1400 fps.

Way too much fun to shoot.
Everyone that shoots my '06 with that load will shoot one after the other. do not even hand the rifle off with less than 30 rounds for the person to plink with.
I have rang steel at 500 with the load. prepare for a lot of drop though.
