The head of the ORA is a trainer and his perspective was that Constitutional carry was going to break his rice bowl. The ORA opposed it by hanging their hat on the lack of training having every kind evil associated with it, from "blood in the streets" to the heartbreak of psoriasis. I took a class from Paul 20 years ago and there's no doubt he's opinionated and curmudgeonly in his ways. The only way to achieve success is to organize better, communicate more, and keep the issue in front of legislators. OK2A is a great group for this and individuals can make a difference with their legislators. Some of the "NO" votes may be anchored in concrete and there is little that can be done to pull them back. For example, my state senator is in this group and I have written her off so I won't waste my time except to attempt to get her turned out of office.

However, I'd also say that the legislative sleight of hand and legerdemain that came about by running this as an amendment to a non-related bill also rankled some. This could account for some of the "NO" votes. This also set up the end-of-session shenanigans that allowed the governor to play footloose and fancy-free. She chose not to dance with those that helped bring her to the dance because there was no price to be paid for doing so. The calculus now becomes electing the best candidate for governor who truly understands the issue and be able to present the governor with a straightforward bill early in the session that allows the governor to stand up to the Chamber of Cronies, the ORA, the troopers' association, whatever, and be able to clearly state why the people's voice should be heard when signing it.
Paul is not in good health. No-one from ORA has stepped up too take his place as a floorwalker in the legislative halls. The organization is about kaput unless a miracle happens for them.

More info.
I was running the Ponca Gun Club meeting this evening, and of course this came up again because we have two members that are ORA board members and give us a monthly report of what the ORA is doing legislatively. The board members of the ORA that are also our club members were also disappointed in the turn out and said that the ORA was coming out with a statement about why they opposed Constitutional carry, saying it was a poorly written bill.
When it gets published, I'll post it. I have no idea what it's going to say.

It's ALWAYS a poorly written bill. Someone really needs to do something about this echo...

Fallin said that she thought the infringements we have are "few and minimal". That's not the case for many poor people who would like to exercise their right to carry but don't have $60 for the class, 25$ for the Sheriff's dept, $70 for the fee, etc. aLl in, it's several weeks of work and around $200 to get the license first time around. Perhaps we could sue and say the fee itself is an undue burden to exercise a right? Kinda like when all those states got nailed for poll taxes? If we are going to be forced to have a license to exercise a right, maybe we should focus on making it easier to exercise it by making it less expensive?

Is that Paul Abel? I took my SDA class from him. Either way, sorry to hear of someone in bad health. But it's time for some fresh blood, and I think OK2A is it.

Tony, we live in a society of rules and regulations because as a society we are lacking in self-control. Virtually every, if not all, laws and regulations were put in place because of that fault in human nature. 2A is very important, but so is the rest of the constitution, and the "shall not be infringed" also applies to life. We are not the only segments of our society, and those we call "anti's" have just as strong a position in this nation as we do. Right now, their side has a pretty strong case. We have shootings everyday, mainly by people who should not have access to weapons for various reasons. When "school" shootings are reported, strong emotions are created because we all love our children, and their right to life shall not be infringed either.

Politicians, whether we like them or not, make their decisions hopefully based on what they believe is the right thing for society. More often than not, those decisions are based on what they believe is the majority view, so they can be reelected.

Rights are a "big deal" and rights also carry responsibilities. We have to work within the system, just as the other side does. It was very encouraging to see so many here calling, emailing, and in many cases visiting in person in efforts to move the bill the way we wanted. We have to do more of that. But the thing we cannot do is to act like what we are portrayed as in the media so often. We must be respectful, and appear that we are responsible. Excess testosterone is not our friend!
I understand what your saying but I disagree with a lot of it. Of course there are a lot of people that have access to guns that shouldn’t. But that is beside the point. We could round up all the guns and these sickos would still find ways to murder people. Out of these last few school shootings if it weren’t for our government, teachers, and counselors/doctors, these shootings wouldn’t have happened. The Florida idiot should have been arrested or committed more times than I care to count yet wasn’t. People knew he was a danger yet nothing was done. That has nothing to do with constitutional carry or the 2A for that matter. And as I have said before, without the 2A, all the others would cease to exist. This gross infringement of our 2A rights is sickening. You dang right my testosterone is gonna run high on this issue. As it should for all. And as for the politicians. There are some good ones out there that vote based upon what they believe is right. But even that is wrong. They shouldn’t be voting based upon what you or I or them for that matter want. They should be voting based on the constitution and the bill of rights. As for constitutional carry being vetoed. In my books that is treason. She swore to uphold the constitution of both our state and the US yet went against that very oath. She is a disgrace to Tecumseh and to our state. We have politicians that actively fight against the constitution yet nothing is done to them. They should all be tried for treason and if found guilty given the maximum sentence for their misdeeds. I can be respectful to anyone I come into contact with. And I always am. Even if they are a diehard liberal. I can also talk with anyone without getting mad and hurting our side. It is sad that we have sides but we do. I refuse to be a gutless coward and just sit by playing nice. A lot of good that has done us. Finally, we shouldn’t have to work with our legislators. They work for US!

I knew Paul was no spring chicken and I'm sorry to hear he is experiencing health challenges. How is it ORA retains any sway with the Legislature if no one is there to be the face and voice in the halls?

Actually, they work for every taxpayer, not just those of us who support 2A. And, we do not seem to be the majority voice.

The problem is that those opposing the 2nd Amendment are actively working to alienate and deprive other citizens of their Civil Rights. This is a dire precedent and those engaged in this pursuit should be Policed and Prosecuted with the same vigor as are those who seek to deprive citizens of other Civil Rights.

IMHO a simple solution for the training requirement is you go take a course and then take a certificate and 5 bucks to the DMV and they print a license off with a different color or a special tag or whatever that shows it's completed. But getting the state out of the business of making money so people can carry at home is something that needs to happen.

The issue of licenses to carry was a trend and when it caught on crime went down even though people swore it would be blood in the streets. We have permitless carry in multiple states now and the same thing was said but it never came about. I don't have an issue with training and safety. And I think that places like the OKCGC or anywhere else that holds competitions should be allowed to create the certificates as well as specific trainers. You can choose to pay for training or prove that you are competent and hit the targets while being safe and be considered trained. It's better than what the state requires right now.

FIFY. Civil rights are rights granted by the government... read “privileges.” Natural rights are rights granted by Our Creator, or nature, or simple fact that you’re a human being, or what have you.
