Ask yourself, Do you have insurance on your home? Do you have life insurance? Do you have medical insurance?
Most of us do and hope we never have to use it.
But its better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it. Same with prepping.
Thats how I see it.

Everyone sees the world, assesses the risks, and decides to what degree they're willing to prepare for bad stuff happening. From storm shelters to extended warranties to carrying a gun to having a bunker in the wilderness.
There's no right or wrong; if you need it then you were damn smart to have it, if you don't need it, oh well.

What pisses me off is people living in denial, thinking bad stuff can't/won't happen to them.

I don't prep. I just make sure I have the means to last a few weeks. An ice storm had us a week, maybe a couple days more than that without power. And I was kinda grateful I didnt have to get out. Or sleep without heat. Or sit in the dark at 5:30 in the afternoon.

Plus, I swear ONE OF THESE DAYS I'm gonna grow a tomato that doesn't cost me $50. It has now become a mission ... :bah:

To what degree you prep is where the question can turn to a waste of time IMO. As Annie said above, long as I can drink/eat for a week or and have heat, I'm good. I have a storm cellar these days, I see it as almost a waste of money because at 50 years old I've never needed one but I might. I got it because the builder that built my house offered to put it in over negotiations.

I see that a lot when terrorism issues are discussed. “Oh, that’ll never happen here, they do that in other countries, but not here”.

It already has. Several times. And could again.

Define your terms, not everyone agrees on what being a "prepper" means except in the most general way.

Are you talking about preparing for a biblical apocalypse?
Are you talking about riding out the damage from a powerful ice storm or line of tornados in place?
An EMP employed by a hostile power? (and what is the follow on, war, or they just do that for fun and then stop?)

I have spent my whole adult life in the military planning for various things and one cannot effectively plan, or discuss the value of planning, without a defined end state, e.g. what is the goal and what defines success?

I assume you are just trying to have some fun and stir the pot but that is the single biggest failure of most planning efforts - no clearly defined end state and left-right parameters.
