@swampratt What grain bullet are you running in the 30-06 ? My Mossburg does not like 150 grain, best I have been able to get is 2" groups at 100 yrds. Which is fine for where I hunt but would like to get better than that.
I use 150gr flat base bullets and R-P cases FLS and annealed CCI 200 primers and 52gr IMR 4064
NO crimp and .002" neck tension in brushed necks that are VLD chamfered.
It was not real happy with boat tails.
Unless it was the sierra 165 game king HPBT.
The gameking comes in 2 flavors the HP and the SP .. the HP has a very long bearing surface and it is a super forgiving bullet.
The SP is a short bearing bullet and has not done well for me.
155A max is another one my 30-06 likes.
Modern 30-06 will withstand higher pressures than the Garand and many old rifles.
Work up to these loads.
I have worked past them by more than 2 grains of powder without issues in my gun but I do not want to hammer my parts.
The 155 A-Max load is I again use Prepped R-P cases Yes it makes a difference.
BR2 primers 53gr IMR 4064 3.280 OAL No crimp 2980 FPS average in my 22" barrel.
In my notes I have 4.9" 500 yard group and first 2 shots were 1.8" apart.
Set scope 8 clicks for 500 Zero.
My scope is zero at 100 and sits 1.75" above the centerline of the barrel and it is 4-16x40 Centerpoint .The old original model.. new ones were not so good.
I found those 155 boat tail bullets like to move fast to get accurate. Sierra palma 155 was the same way I think 2156 was the part number.
Those would flat move through my 30-06 barrel. But were horrible on deer. Pencil right through.
Moving at 3176 FPS measured at 20 feet from muzzle.
That was H4350 powder.. but that is all I am saying about that load.
It was very accurate.
I have a very nice to shoot load for the 30-06. same cases and flare the mouth and add 11.5gr red dot powder and 170gr Lee gas checked bullet..Iron the flare out with no crimp and it moves right along at 1400fps.
I use CCI 200 primer in that .
I have shot 3 different jacketed bullets with the same load.. not as fast 1300's for speed but also not as accurate but was under 2" at 100.
Barrel stays cool for dozens of shots. quieter than a black cat fire cracker.
Take a digital picture of the crown of your gun in good light and load it onto the computer so you look at it in full screen mode.
Mine had odd looking chatter marks that were not even.
I still got MOA and better with the 3031 bullet from hornady.. that is a 150gr flat base SP.. but the bullet shape changed a couple years ago.
I helped out the rifle crown with a marble and baking soda paste.
I put a paper plug into the muzzle of the barrel so I could have 1/4" of barrel showing and made a paste with baking soda and water. placed the thick paste over the crown and took a marble and began rotating it in the slurry back and forth .. basically finishing the crown knocking the rat chatters off of it.
That cut my groups in 1/2 when shooting boat tail bullets. it never liked boat tails until I did that.
It is free and easy to try.

The 165 grain HPBT Sierra Game King like swampratt said is golden in the 30-06. I've killed so many deer with that bullet that I've lost count. It's probably the most devastating round I've ever shot into a deer. Destroys the innards.
The 150 grain is best left to the .308. It's the sweet spot for that caliber according to the pundits. I don't own a .308 so have to just rely on their data.
I met a guy and he wanted to go shooting with me and invited me to a range in norman that had some berms and he told me he had this 30-06 that had been to 2 gunsmiths and was told the barrel is shot out and needs replaced 8" groups at best at 100 yards.
He said normally it was 12" at 100 and best to keep it under 50 yards.
He and the 2 gunsmiths tried to get it to shoot with handloads and factory ammo.
I told him bring it with him when we go shooting.
He did and I put a target up at 50 yards and cloverleafed the rounds. 3 shots.
I then stuck the paper at 100 and shot about .9" group.
He wanted a go at it as he was a bench rest shooter anyway and he printed 3 shots in under .75" group at 100 yards.
I told him looks to shoot fine to me.
He wanted the recipe if I did not mind giving it to him.

I would not mind trying some loads in your mossberg and checking crown and checking the throat vs my 30-06.

Is the attraction to the MVP the use of the AR mag? If so, the new Ruger American rifles are available in AR mag versions. The .223, .300blk, and Grendel chamberings.
