I have not been to the places you are going but enjoyed Pompeii and the Italian people. Tourist areas may always be problematic...explore off the path. Be sure to go to a bar...they are beautiful, high scale places you would be proud to take guests.....fine coffee, high quality confections, speciality liqueurs etc.....beautiful counters.
Watch out when you are walking. They do not place protective fences around construction on the sidewalk. Had a co-worker who spent a couple of weeks in the hospital as a result.

I forgot about the bars. Your exactly correct. Coffee with a brandy chaser after lunch was an interesting concept when I was there on the company dime.

It sounds like you probably would not have time, but my favorite place in Italy is Stresa, on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. It really isn't a tourist area, but used to be a resort area for the aristocrats. Nice hotels, and several good restaurants, and a very relaxing atmosphere.

The wife and I just got back from there. With only 2 days, you really need to have a real tight schedule and not waste a lot of time wondering around what you want to see. A lot of the things you mentioned are walking distance, get you a good pair of walking shoes and carry a backpack that os hard for someone to get into or your stuff will be gone just like that. We have family thst live there and so it was easy to go to the different places.

I would suggest to buy any of your museum tickets online, and skip the line tickets are the best.

Enjoy!
