Rats love it more than cheese or grain. A squirrel is a rat whose grandpa learned to climb a tree so why would you want to eat one of those things?
A rat is a mighty mouse. I would think the quantity of bait available in a jar of peanut butter would require really frequent trips to obtain attraction of any significance.
Think of it like instead of a feeder that automatically feeds a half gallon of feed twice a day, you are carrying the half gallon out there twice a day.

I tried it once, Deer didnt even look at it.

One thing I noticed when food is given to deer on a regular basis is they visit that food late in the day or when it is dark.
Another thing I noticed with whitetail deer is they are curious.
I have taken a wizz in a spot and it was less than 2 hours time and 2 deer came out of the woods into the pipe line to smell it and one did not get to go back home

Peanut butter works. Best to use the cheapest, generic stuff you can find as it is thicker and less oil content. Take the lid off and screw it onto a tree about 3-4’ off the ground, then screw the jar back onto the lid and cut the bottom out of the jar. That keeps most the rain out of your peanut butter and the thicker stuff won’t run out of the jar. Deer will eat the peanut butter and continue to lick the inside of the jar until it’s all gone.
I have used PB and had success with it but usually on stands that I haven't hunted before (public land and controlled hunts). Down at McAlester AAP, I would carry the jar in with me and find a stick off the ground. I would jam it in the jar and come out with a blob of PB and then put the other end of the stick in the ground. I shot a doe that had stopped her path when she smelled it and did a right angle to search for what she was smelling. She went down immediately, so I left her there for a couple of hours hoping she was inheat and I would have my pick of bucks showing up. That didn't happen. Doe = quality pass that year so I got to go back to McAAP the following year. The following day, I had a buck come straight to the PB stick but I had hung up my bow and was digging through my pack for my sack lunch. He was there before I noticed him and all I could do was watch because he was so close. I think the smell of the doe kill the day before finally made him too nervous to stick around for long. It always seems like a good shooting opportunity comes up when you are climbing down the ladder or taking a nature call break.
Been 3 or 4 years since I was at MCAAP, baiting was legal at the time, it's not public. So was public just a few years ago.
I was there three years ago and baiting was legal. Its a federal facility, not state. They make their own rules.
Baiting on ODW land is illegal. Local city owned land and federal land have their own rules. You CAN bait on the public land I hunt as it’s owned and governed by the city police.
As far as the peanut butter I was just curious. I think the raccoons would have the jar cleaned out in ten minutes or less. There are a lot of them where I hunt.
