I saw this a few minutes ago.

It seems that it is judges that say it is okay to not stand for the anthem, and judges expect us to stand when they enter the court room. What would happen if those in the room took a knee?

not sure where the court derives it's power to such things, maybe Dave can weigh in.

I also don't understand the desire for the government, through threat of force, to make someone stand for the anthem

But again, i don't know why judges can do it.

We had a local judge who has caught a lot of flak and was censured by the State Supreme Court for being overly harsh in his "contempt" charges. This is what that would fall under - although to my understanding, it took a LONG time to come to the point.

Refusing to stand for the Anthem, while deplorable, is an action taken in supposed protest aimed at racial inequality (I think). Refusing to stand when the judge enters the courtroom is just stupid. What would the reason be? Disdain for the individual man himself or disdain for the law? What's next? People in the military refusing to exchange salutes? That is gonna go over real well in my Marine Corps. Not.

"Private Shmuctatelli! Getcher ass over here right now! Did I see correctly? Did you just fail to salute as we passed on the fantail? "
"I don't salute anymore 'cause I protest."
"Are you f'in shtt'n me? Are you f'in shtt'n me!!!?"

(It's like in Monopoly, when you don't pass GO and you don't collect $200; you just go to jail).

Protesting the serious racial inequities in the system? (Yes, they're real.) Perhaps protesting being dragged in there against your will in the first place (hint: you don't have to be a defendant to be dragged before the court; I can bring you in as a witness whether you want to come or not, and if you don't, it'll be a bench warrant)?

If memory serves, we're still an all-volunteer military, so the "protest" in that case would be to not sign up in the first place; when you sign on the dotted line, you agree to the terms and conditions, which include rendering appropriate military courtesies. You also agree to the UCMJ, so if you do something to break the rules, the military owes you the conditions of your contract--that is, discipline according to the UCMJ.

Contracts work both ways, and penalty clauses are fun! :D
