Anybody out there? I was looking through the archives and found some very old threads on radios and emergency preparedness, but doesn't seem like a lot of activity around here for the subject. I am growing more interested by the day. Thinking about taking my tech test at the Green Country Hamfest this year. I have a bunch of questions about operations, ranges, and more.
I ended up with an Amazon gift card and picked up a radio, now my mind is swarming with the "I wonder if I can...." thoughts.

They're around, though on the air in NEOK it's mostly emergency communications stuff. If you make it down to Dallas or Houston the repeaters are full of much more interesting conversations. The tech test is stupid easy, take the practice test for a couple of days and you will pass.

If you want info on a Tech class in Sperry on the first three Saturdays of January, drop me a PM. We'll offer a test at the end of the class.

Been thinking about it myself; my 17 year old passed the Tech test last fall, and dabbles in it a bit. He's been pestering me about getting my Tech license.

I have had my Tech and General for about 3 years now. If you have any question, feel free to PM me. I live in Mustang, but my son lives in Owasso. My main use is for emergency communications. If you get your General and a HF rig, you can even send email through the radio. On VHF, if you have the right radio with APRS you can send test messages to another APRS radio. If you are down in this area let me know and I will be glad to meet up and show you my setup. It would also be to your advantage to attend a couple of radio clubs in your area and join the one you like the best. Those local people could help you out a lot. KG5FBO

I'd be happy to help also. Call is KD5FX, licensed since 1981. Extra class for 20 yrs or so. Active on HF, VHF, UHF. I have a Flex 6300 SDR radio (state of the art) plus an older Kenwood 850 that still works fine on HF and a Kenwood 1.5 KW amp. Dipoles for 80 & 40 meters with a Hexbeam (2 element Yagi) at 50 ft for 20 to 6 meters. Worked over 300 countries in world so far on HF. ARES District Emergency Coordinator for my county. Net control for the local 2 meter net on VHF. I like to work DX and build new antennas. I'm also a Radio Engineer for a statewide FM radio network. Ask away! There are no dumb questions, just unanswered ones! I can send you my home email and we can chat that way or do it here so others can learn also...

I have a friend at work that got me interested. I got the first license a few years ago. I have several hand held radios and a mobile set up as a base. I have a 35' pole I need to finish painting and put in the ground. It may never be my main hobby because I'm into guns and car/trucks also. Now that there are more digital repeaters going up around the country ,its possible to talk around the world on a 5 watt handheld. I need to have a change done on all my radios because of a change done to our local repeater. My issued call sign is KG5FUU. Yeah, thanks FCC.
