I've thrown centerfire cartridges in a fire before. (They were in a derelict shed on the property my brother bought, had been exposed to the weather and God only knows what else, and were very badly corroded, so it was no great loss.) As noted above, it was very unimpressive, even on rifle cartridges, which just made a slightly bigger "pffft" than the handgun cartridges.
