Hello everyone, brand new to the forum, this site was recommended to me by a friend of mine who spoke very highly of the information he has been able to acquire in the past while shopping and modding firearms so I figured I could give him a break and pick the brains of some of the members on here, that being said I appreciate all the advice and input from anyone willing to offer it. I'm interested in purchasing and possibly eventually modifying a 10mm Glock, not for competitions or anything just to have something fun to take to the range that could also protect my home when needed. I moved here from Alaska about 4 years ago being stationed there for 4 years in the Army. I have experience with higher caliber pistols as I carried a .44 magnum while fishing and put around 100 rounds through it, I also carried a Sig 938 for my daily carry after very quickly getting tired of a Springfield 1911 micro that may as well been a brick in my holster (not high calibers I know but just putting it out there as experience with different handguns) I have since sold all of my firearms and am now looking into starting over, I do not intend on carrying the pistol so barrel length isn't a concern, I do have larger hands so a larger frame is ideal, I dont know anything about the 10mm cartridge being a 1911 fanboy I've shot .45s more than anything so after all that being said I guess my main questions would be if there are any drawbacks to a 10mm over say a 45? Is the Glock 40 worth the extra cost over the Glock 20 if I have no intent on doing competitions? What generation would be best to look into? Stuff I should look for when inspecting them at purchase, if I would be better off buying new over used, things to maybe modify or replace upon initial purchase, stuff like that. I know there is a lot here and hopefully that doesn't put people off from reading it or contributing information. Thanks Everyone.

Welcome jbailey to OSA. I’ll let the Glock experts chime in here but wanted to say hello.

Welcome to the forum! I'm fairly new too, so when they start picking on the newbies maybe we can team up. LOL!

I don't have any experience with 10mm, so probably should stay quiet. But I like living on the edge, so I will say this much... I think recoil will be a bit more with the 10mm, and between the G20 and G40 I would probably go with the longer barrel as I would assume it would take better advantage of the 10mm. As far as new vs. used, I've bought a lot of used guns over the years and never had any more problems than with new... but anymore you probably won't save much money. If I could save $100 on a used gun I would probably do that, especially if I was at all familiar with who was selling it, but for much less than that I'd probably buy new and avoid any potential headaches.

Some people prefer used so that there isn't a form 4473 on file anywhere. Everything being equal, I will admit that appeals to me a bit too.

I have the Glock 20 and it is an absolute hoot!! I roll my own so cost difference with 45 is not an issue as far as ammo goes. I tried to go with an after market barrel but found the stock barrel is more accurate and 100% reliable with my coated 200 grain lead boolits. I have large hand so this G20 is comfortable for me. If you would like to try before you buy we could meet at a gun range and you are welcome to give this pistol a workout. We also have group shoots and it will be at those as long as Mother nature does not poop on our schedule>
I have never got my hands on a G40 so no help there.

That web site and the gang over there are free with info on all things 10 MM. Lots of G40 guys on there.

Either will make a good pistol. I like long slides personally. I can’t really think of a competition that a 10mm would make a good choice. Either way you probably can’t go wrong.

Welcome to OSA @JBailey91,
I have Glocks in all 3 calibers and I will say that the 10mm if my favorite for all the same reason as stated above. But you can't really go wrong with either choice you make. I have the G20 and G29.
