Toyota pickups are now the best trucks made.....but

you are limited in mixing and matching options these days.

For example, if I want a new 2019 SR5 Tundra double-cab 2WD with navigation built into the dash and a box at least 6 1/2 feet long here is what I have to do:

1. 5.7 L V8
2. Super White exterior color only
3. $1,400 option package

The 2019 TRD Pro is great but you are stuck with a puny 5 1/2' box.

A real USABLE pickup truck box is 6 1/2 feet plus. 8-foot is the most usable as you fit in a sheet of plywood behind closed tailgate.

The Super White color allows a 2019 TRD Pro grille to be ordered in the same surround color if you want TOYOTA letters across the front of your new SR5.

I found this out by using the build feature at the Toyota corporate site unless the dealer can custom order you something more special if money is no object.

Tundra and Tacoma are both built in American plants, Georgia and Texas.

Not even close. Toyota didn't even make the line up in top marks for quality, dependability or performance. When it comes to trucks Chevy, Ford, GMC and Dodge still own foreign trucks. And that's not an opinion, that's backed up by JD Power and MotorTrend.

I would like to hear the views of independent mechanics who actually work on these vehicles. My 2001 GMC Sierra Z71 (several problems...dealer fixed) 2005 Dodge Ram 4x4 SLT Cummins w/ 6spd man....excellent truck...wish I still had it, my 2009 Tacoma TRD 275,000 miles still runs great.....good off-road too....just can't tow much.

The "domestic" Big Three are often built in Mexico and Canada. There are no more DODGE division trucks. It got replaced with something called RAM. I have a 1995 Corolla (Fremont, California built) that's been bulletproof: 25 years in the making. Toyota trucks are now the ones built on American soil by American hands. Imported from Texas and Georgia. Check Consumers Reports for which trucks are most dependable. American vehicle magazines are often biased toward "American" brands.

My homemade truck is the most reliable.
The best of everything you need in a truck.
Strong frame Ford 9" rearend with big brakes TH 350 transmission 350 SBC engine and a carburetor.
18 MPG. One of the most reliable power plants around. Not afraid of dents and scratches either after all it is a truck.
Recycled parts. Think Green.
And it only cost me $3,000 to build it.

New vehicles are a bad investment one of the worst you can make.

Not a mechanic, but the mechanic I used until he retired worked on about anything that came through the door. He was a good mechanic. When asked what he recommended, he said "some are better than others, all have their issues, but I really don't like wrenching on my own cars because I don't get paid for that. I drive a Tundra".

I bought a new 4x4, 4-door Tundra in 2012. I sold it 3 months later. Piss poor mileage from a v-8 with VVT and direct injection. 7 speed trans that was shiftier than a 11 year old adhd patient who forgot his ritalin-Os. And it had the most god awful drown in the cab at highway speeds. I hated it and went back to a Tahoe.
