Well, I may be making myself a pariah, but the wife and I shop at Walmart most of the time. When one is retired and on fixed incomes, Walmart is helpful. That said, I don't do any shopping for guns or ammo there. I may price check on occasion, but seldom buy there.
I'm curious, Terry. Why don't you buy guns or ammo at Walmart?

I've never hidden the fact that I work in a Walmart sporting goods department, so you guys are hurting my feelings... or you would be, if I cared! I like to say that I'm trying to be that "unicorn"--a Walmart sporting goods associate who knows guns and ammo and will give you good service. That I am was brought home to me when I called another store. A customer didn't like the Marlin 336 we had in the gun tower (the only one we had that day, IIRC) and asked me to call around to see if any nearby stores also had one. I called the closest store and, when I finally got someone on the line, I asked them if they had a Marlin 336 in stock. His reply? "What's that?" Now, at the time, we only carried two Marlins--the 336 and the 60. I had to describe it to him and he had to go to the gun locker to see if he had one. Why he didn't use the A&D log is beyond me.

BTW, if you come to my store and I'm not in the department, I can be reached by radio. It's not a store radio, it's mine. I bought it shortly after I started working in the department since if I waited until the store provided me with a radio I'd still be waiting now, almost four years later. If I'm not right there, I'm either on the other side of the store (I don't move as fast as I used to,) in the rest room, or helping another customer outside of sporting goods (at night, I have to cover the paint counter and the fabric table, too.)

Need call buttons, one time I was in walmart wanting to check out in garden, on the cc machine it touch to call for assistance, I touched it and with in a few minutes here come somebody and was out the door. Gun counter or those departments that need them should have something like that.

oknewshawk I know the feeling of covering other departments, I work at lowes and when they under staff the store you run all over, but still give my customers the best quickest service I can or able to so they are happy and will come back. The front end at my store counts on me and knows if I am there they call me and always call me because I am fastest to respond and get them taken care of and the customer.

I love WalMart ! I shop there regularly.

I can buy engine oil, sewing needles, milk, lunchmeat, ammo, cold medicine, tires, apples, and underwear all in the same place !

That doesn't necessarily mean that I do purchase all of those items there, but I could if I so desired.

It's the modern general store.

Let me know if you ever transfer to the Madill store... :D

No kidding. We just get the passerby without a key to access the ammo and have another wait until that person with a key shows up. At the Skiatook WM last summer we were told both of the people with a key were at lunch and would be back in an hour if we wanted to wait.
That's when I get out my phone and call the store manager while I'm standing there.
Our local WM superstore sporting goods section is a pathetic example. One aisle 30' long, most of it is junk that nobody buys. I've been in WM's that have great sporting goods sections even selling reloading supplies.

As a former employee of wal-mart about 13 years ago, the goal is to keep payroll as low as possible and sales as high as possible. Thats why there are never any checkout lines open. The owasso walmart late at night only has thr self checkouts open and a security person watching the door. Thats it, everybody else is doing overnight stocking.

Not so much the registers is finding somebody to unlock the ammo. I went after work it was 7 in the evening wasn't crowed at all, should have had somebody there not 15-20 min later some dude with a key finally shows up. He even said why have not responded yet. I wasn't the only one, another lady wanted a fishing license, she waited 20 minutes then said screw it and left. Another dude guess needing a license for something had been waiting as well. I even called the store, it rang at least 20 times before somebody picked up, told the guy that answer can I get some help at the gun counter his response was yea will see if can find somebody in a huff of a voice of god I have to do my job. Its that time of year, fishing, hunting we are going to be coming in for supplies at least have somebody close by to get what we need. Guess just need to pay few extra bucks and go to academy where I can pull it off the shelf and walk out with it faster then waiting for somebody to unlock it.
Grab the phone behind the counter and dial 4444 in order to ask for customer assistance at the ammo counter in sporting goods over the intercom.

Just make sure to preface the announcement with "Attention Walmart associates," that way it sounds official.
