A little early yet for Black Diamond in Oklahoma. Black Diamonds are coming out of South Texas this time of year.

My dad was a produce buyer for grocery stores for 40 years and we always managed to get the best watermelons all Summer long! When I was teen, I worked Summers in the OKC Farmer's Market and always found great watermelons! But the OKC Market is far from what it used to be. Now the markets at OSU-OKC and Cleveland County are pretty good.

Yep. There's a guy that sets up at the OSU-OKC Farmers market that we call Watermelon Man; but I haven't seen any Black Diamonds so far this year there either. It's easy to spot him; 35-40 year old lookin' guy, red headed, farmer lookin' dude, standing around with a bunch of watermelons to sell.

Now I understand the saying, "Eat your heart out."
My grandpa (who was known to sit in the cab of his truck with a .30-30 to keep the coyotes out of his watermelon patch) once stopped at a watermelon stand. When the guy told him how much it was per pound, he told him, "well, then just cut me about two pounds out of its heart."

I tried to grow melons once on a couple acres next to some woods.
Don’t do it. Right when they got ripe, field rats came out of the woods and ate a hole into every one of them.
