I guess if it is still in good enough shape to read the serial number, otherwise what's the point?

Just because you can't read the serial number while sitting in your bass boat out on the lake doesn't mean the firearm can't be identified...

Dredging up a firearm connected to a crime might actually help bring resolution to a case.

What's the point of not letting the law dogs take a look at it? What are you going to do, catch and release?

I would have called it in too.
A cousin found an Iver Johnson Revo in the South Canadian I think it was while seining minnows. He took it to the Norman PD to see if it was anything they were looking for. A couple days later they called him to pick it up. Wasn’t an issue with anything they had a need for.
It evidently had been in the river for many, many, years. The corrosion was eating it up really bad.
Just a wall hanger now with an unknown story behind it.
