I once put a gps tracker on an employees staff car and it proved to be quite interesting where they were spending their day when they were supposed to be working. I hate lying thieves and lazy employees

My employer uses two different GPS systems for our vehicles. I know a few techs who have been fired for not being where they were supposed to be.

My bet is it was leftover from a tote the note place from the past unless you bought it from a place like that. Regardless of if you paid cash or not, some lots put those in all vehicles and they usually remove them but some slip through the cracks. The OBD2 wire tap is a popular spot because they have a hot all the time wire. The 2 wire hookup is simply for gps tracking only, nothing else. Depending on the tracking program, they can map routes, times, stops, speed, and can track vehicle in real-time or the last known signal (unplugged or hidden).

Most employer or helicopter parent ( haha ) type devices simply plug into the 16 pin OBD2 port. Similar to the ones insurance companies try to get you to use. Some can also monitor vehicle parameters, like throttle/brake usage, acceleration/deceleration rate, speed etc.

Manufacturers are putting black boxes in some vehicles to monitor vehicle parameters. Insurance companies reportedly have access to these when your in an accident to help determine what actually happened.

Yup that has been going on for a while. I thought I read an article years ago they certain places can subpoena that data if they have cause in an accident. To prove someone was lying about speed and hitting the breaks. Lots of data is recorded in new cars especially if you have lane assist or something like that. The wives 2016 Accord has Honda assist and it has radar and camera on it that car is almost 4 years old.

Some dealers put the ones that are "just a GPS" in to recover in case of theft. Sometimes they forget to pull them. My mustang had one and it wasn't connected to anything but a hot and ground. They actually called and asked me to bring it back. This one wasn't the kind that disables anything though.

Several years ago a place called hawkes motor company in Pryor did something similar, but it had a keypad to enter a code, if you made your payment that month they'd give you a code to start your vehicle, if you didn't, no code and you couldn't start your vehicle and they came and took it.
