It’s fun, go do it. I shot a S&W 66 a few times. I was slow as molasses on my reloads but had a blast. Some of the shooters out there are amazing and some are almost as slow as me. They are also a great bunch of people. Check out ICORE as well as USPSA.

I would tell you that a 6 shot gun stands no chance against 8 shot guns. I have a killer all forged, pre-lock, 5" 625 that's all tuned up with triple ball locks, action work, custom fibre optic front sight, chamfered cylinder, etc. that just sets in the safe now. Even with major PF scoring you'll get smoked by 8 shot guns. I'm still mulling over reaming it to .460 Rowland so it'll have some practical use.

If you hang with it for more than a couple of matches you'll get addicted, then you are going to want that 8 shot gun so you can get better and compete with the guys to can flat out rock a round gun. It is a ton of fun and if fun is all you're looking for that Ruger will serve you very well. But get the 8 shot Redhawk, you'll be much happier not handicapping yourself from the jump.

Found it
maximum of 6 rounds fired before reload if Major PF declared, 8 if minor PF declared.
Correct. They changed the rules sometime back to allow 8 shot guns to shoot all 8 rounds if they were scored minor. That was right after I got my 625 all dressed up and ready to go. It basically obsoleted every .45ACP competition gun in existence which prior to that had "ruled" the division for years.

I went to the ICORE match at OKC. Took my 6 shooter with speed loaders. Got my a** handed me against the 8 shot 9mm clip guns.
Not only more shots before a reload, but every other stage was a par time 16 or 24 shot that only the 8 shot boys had a chance to get all their shots off.
I asked " What happened to 6 shot neutral" and was told in effect, "Buy a new gun."
ICORE now scores unfinished PAR time strings as "Penalty MIKES" so after zeroing half the PAR time stages, I took my "obsolete revolver" home and said farewell.

You guys worry too much about winning. It’s how you do against yourself and enjoy shooting a match. I can’t beat Tiger Woods at golf but I beat myself almost every time I play.

I’d give you $400 for that 625 if you want to make some room in your safe.
