Sharpening knives.

First off I'll admit to not ever being all that good holding the correct angle with a oil or wet stone and I screwed up a couple of knives using a Ken Onion Worksharp.....I could also tell you a story about me using the wheels (like they have at the gun shows) angling the blade wrong and it caught the wheel and I ended up with a knife stuck in my belly and going to the emergency room (folks tend to look at you kinda funny when you walk into the emergency room with only the handle of a knife sticking out of your gut .)

Anyway, I needed something to get me over the minimum order dollar amount to qualify for free shipping with Amazon and I had been seeing several positive reviews on the Rada knife sharpener so I figured what the heck and ordered one to be used mainly for kitchen knives......it works great, just a few passes through the Rada followed up with a few passes through my old Edgemaker and kitchen knives can easily shave the hair off my arm.

Can't recall where I picked up the habit many moons ago of testing the sharpness of a just sharpened knife that way.......I'd be willing to bet that a lot of old farts like me still do it.

My mother had one of these when I was a kid and it would put the razor edge on a knife.

Yes, I would say that a lot of us old farts have been doing that for years. We were also told to not test sharpness by cutting paper with it; that is was hard on the blade. Dave McCroskey will tell you that's hogwash. He does it regularly.

I've never had any luck getting knives sharpened with any of those "drag the knife through it" sharpeners. The only system I've ever used that worked for me was (is, I guess) the Spyderco SharpMaker. I might have to try this one.
